Enough to see that he didn't play in the line a lot, not that I would expect that of a half back anyway, didn't rack up huge tackle counts (again not necessary for a half back), was not famed as a big hitter and did not have a great technique. I've seen him beaten one on one. How any of this comes remotely near your laughable definition of "brilliant defensive player" I don't know, he was adequate at best. He was also playing alongside some very good defensive players whilst Schofield had the pea hearted Leeds pack for support. You come up with some evidence to back up your moronic claim about Edwards defensive genius.

That is fair comment. Tries alone do not prove who is better. Performances say a lot more. Schofield was head and shoulders a more influential and better player than Edwards at the highest levels of the game, whether that be in the international arena or in the Australian competition. Schofield proved his world class credentials at those levels, Edwards never did.


Cunningham and Newton have a lot in common. Both were excellent hookers but neither were world class because neither proved it at the highest levels of the game. Cunningham was the better and more influential player domestically, but Newton was the better player internationally. I put that difference down to lack of motivation - Cunningham just never appeared interested in playing international fixtures. He'd regularly withdraw from international selection with trivial injuries. Newton by contrast was motivated and raised his game at that level.

You are correct - we never won a game against Australia when Cunningham played. His international record against New Zealand isn't much better either, on the losing side 8 times before finally breaking his duck with a couple of wins - one which was a mid-season joke fixture at Knowsley Road against a weak team comprised mainly of Kiwi exiles playing in Super League.

Winning a bucketload of trophies for Wigan doesn't make Edwards a better plater than Schofield. You were happy to discount the number of tries scored at international level alone as being a ridiculous way of comparatively proving anything, but counting domestic trophies collected at Wigan is just as ridiculous.

Is that the 20-14 one-off win in isolation against Brisbane which conveniently forgets these results?

Schofield was a brilliant player.

Very few Brits win the respect of the aussies whether thats RL, RU or Cricket. Schofield did and Edwards didnt.

Wigan wanted to sign Schoey as part of the Hanley to Leeds deal and offered him the chance to be worlds highest paid player. Had he gone and won numerous CC and Championships in the latter part of his career I believe he wouldnt have been as bitter as he is now or be such a douche and there wouldnt have even been a debate, everyone would have said Schoey. He probably wouldnt have been a hero of mine though!

A lot of people who have voted for Edwards have done so because Schoey is an idiot now in my opinion. He doesnt have a chip on his shoulder he has a Big Mac and fries super sized on his shoulder!

Playing in exceptional teams often makes good players look excellent. Edwards was a very good player at domestic level, but I think his reputation is flattered by the team he had around him. For those harping on about the number of trophies Edwards won, I just have to ask you why you aren't clamouring for Wigan to sign Ian Kirke, (who despite having won as many trophies as anyone in the last 8 years is a constant subject of derision on the Southstander board.)

Schofield on the other hand excelled at every level, often behind beaten packs, and domestically in a much less successful team.

They'll both undoubtedly remain legends of the game, but Schofield (damaged goods or not) was IMO a much better player.

It is a simple matter of who would you rather have in your team. Edwards by a country mile.

Thurston might not have the flair and speed of Benji Marshall. But I would still rather see him at Wigan than Benji. He would have a much bigger influence on the team despite not breaking the line every time he gets the ball.

I remember the great fanfare of Edwards' signing and have always wondered why the fuss? To me he was very one dimensional with his only real asset being that of being v good at backing up the dominant Wigan pack of the day. If he'd played for almost any other club I doubt he'd be held in such high esteem or have gained as many caps.

I know that for most of Fev's coaches of that era the thought of 'how do we stop Edwards' never crossed their mind as they knew Deryck Fox would easily nullify him.

If I was a coach or player I would have Schofield in my team, I just wouldn't want to give him a lift to and from training or have a pint with him afterwards.
