| Im not a big fan of the Magic Weekend at all.
At no point is the crowd sufficient to make it look exciting and worthwhile.
I often think the positive local feedback must come from the local pub landlords!!!
I'd much prefer the idea from about 10 years ago being progressed whereby we have a round "On the road" If stategic and well placed in the right stadiums this must surely be much more worthwhile???
When Cas play Catalan there will be about 800 in a 66 000 stadium!!!! Surely the same game somewhere like Bristol Rovers ground to support Bristol Sonics Development or at Notts County to support the Outlaws development is a better idea. there could then be another 6 projects like that nationwide.
Thoughts?

| Quote ="af"IIRC most people had a problem with the derbies when they were one of four. Now each side only plays each other twice, surely the derbies would be more palatable.
The RFL should have seen the possibility of this fixture lit arising. The reaction across the boards is very predictable and it's not just coming from MM-haters. The lack of any big game is a real stumbling block for those wishing to justify the expense of the weekend. This is not quite a 'damned if they do...' situation. A 1st vs 2nd, 3rd vs 4th format would be much less likely to throw up such an unappealing set of games.'"
I think a better format would be to not announce any games and have 1v2 3v4 5v6 7v8 9v10 11v12 13v14 based on the league table from the week before. That would work even better if relegation was in place.
If they had gone with that last year we'd have got
St Helens v Hull KR
Leeds v Huddersfield
Castleford v Harlequins
Wakefield v Hull
Wigan v Catalans
Warrington v Bradford
Salford v Celtic
Then again some teams have played 10 and others 11 so maybe that would be unfair?
I still think it's a good idea though! It guarantees your playing an important game.

| Quote ="andyed-wiganrl":7wac4g7aWasnt my idea and I dont really see how it was complicated
but as regards that point id say your completely wrong....more than their usual crowds would turn out IMO because its a glamour tie in the challenge cup, against SL opposition, in a finals atmosphere in a big ground.
Look at the :7wac4g7abarrow wigan :7wac4g7atie last year, or the :7wac4g7agateshead stains :7wac4g7atie for how fans of smaller clubs would turn out. If barrow say drew wigan again they would take 4-5k IMO as its the closest their going to get to a final, and in many ways would be 'their' final. Both barrow and gateshead didnt get 'battered' as you put it, but held their own in the game, and also even though the majority of their fans knew the reality of the draw was an inevitable loss, they still turned out in great number.
In addition i would anticipate say 1-2k of floating NL support would go as a neutral to the day, merely to watch some good rugby as the event has a more inclusive feel rather than a strictly SL day out. In addition i think more SL fans would turn out for the SL clubs than currently attend MM as there is the draw of straight knock out, and it would bring back some of the magic of the cup and give the NL something real to aim for.
IMO the RFL should seriously look at this idea as its the only way its ever likely to work IMO, and does then have potential to grow year on year and reignite the CC rather than its inevitable slow death. This would be a true RL event with 2-4 NL clubs or so (depending how many SL match ups were in round 4, and how many NL clubs come through) that serves so many purposes'" were few and far between , and were mostly locals like me , if the match had been more than a bus ride away I would not have traveled

Generally I would agree BUT doesn't the whole Magic weekend exist because the Welsh Tourist board and Scottish (not quite sure who) pay Superleague to go there for a weekend.
Would the on the road games get sponsorship to cover the short fall if there was no Magic Weekend?

Good point. But im of the opinion that the weekend does more harm than good. The games welfare has to come before deals such as that.

| to make the magic weekend more attractive it needs either all the games to have more importance, or it needs a figurehead game to be the main event of the weekend. my suggestions would be either:
a) hold the last 16 round of the challenge cup as the magic weekend. thus every game has the importance of progressing to the next round.
or
b) hold the world club championship as the main event of the weekend i.e. the last game on the sunday. the super league team left without an opponent could play the national league 1 champions thus giving some national league representation at the weekend. so for example next years fixtures (building upon the draw that has already been made) would be:
Saints v HKR
Warrington v Salford
Wigan v Huddersfield
Hull v Quins
Bradford v Crusaders
Castleford v Catalans
Wakefield v Barrow
Leeds V Melbourne

| looking at the fixtures drawn, the rfl must be ting themselves wondering how many fans will turn up, being a hull fc fan, our game against quins hardly inspires me to travel up to edingburgh, especially when we have catalan away 2 weeks later, can only afford 1 of those trips, so catalan it is.
now, if it was in dublin........

It's sole purpose is to identify whingeing, stuck-in-the-past Jonahs who would be happiest if a 30 mile journey was the maximum to be made all season.
And this it does very well.

I think the fact leeds would be playing to become world club champions against a fantastic melbourne team would more than make up for not playing for 2 super league points on that particular weekend.
the fixture list wouldnt become MORE unbalanced. leeds and wakefield would start the season a week early as leeds do anyway next season. only difference is the world club challenge would be in may and not february.
Also i used wakefield playing barrow purely as an example as they are due to play leeds at the weekend. In reality it could be the bottom placed super league team against the national league one champions. Thus giving the national league champions the real incentive of beating the team they could be replacing when the next licenses are announced.
