Correct. Which is precisely why Shayne Hayne the Layme Brayne shouldn't be within a working visa of Elland Road.
NRL refs: so good they need two per game.

| I don't understand why the impact of different styles of referee is seen as such a threat by Aus. In other sports its part and parcel of international competition. They basically say 'ref it our way or its not fair'. I just don't get it.

| Insecurity, its a national psychology of Australia! You only have to look at the paranoia in the country about a few hundred boat people ffs.
Go back to the old days, whatever country your touring in you use their refs. Sorts it and no opportunity for whinging!

Says who?
Ganson is better than Shayne - so therefore lets have the Kiwi ref and the French ref covering half each. Problem sorted.

| I would have thought that - publicly at least - the attitude from the coach should be more around adjusting as required to the ref and largely being unperturbed. Even if they lose the final, England have won the PR war on this.

| Not read the whole thread, is it will be the same as every other year the Aussies come here and don't get their own way.
My issue is that Hayne has been part of a two man reffing team all year. This game has 1 ref, and as the biggest game of the year, that should rule him out.
The Aussies have admitted that their refs aren't good enough to mark the 10m and control the ptb, so how the hell they can want one of their own doing this baffles me!

| The convicts started this one before the game 2 weeks ago when they refused a neutral ref then. It was obvious that after having Ganson for that one they think they can get their own way for the final and probably will.
IMO all refs should be neutral, given that the french bloke is as bad as that Ashley Klown and on thosr grounds need to go to the NRL where he would only be half as bad it has to be the Kiwi.
Why we didn't vote for him in the first place i have no idea. According to the news report all 3 represenatives voted for their own countryman, i assume that is England, NZ and Convictland, so if we had just voted for the kiwi then there wouldn't have been a problem

| Quote ="Leaguefan"It really shouldn't matter who the match officials are IF the players play by the AGREED INTERNATIONAL rules.
The trouble is we all know that the players will try to bend the rules and downright break them.
Whoever is in charge will deal with it how they see fit rightly or wrongly and that is how the game will and should be played.
In fact why not use all 4 refs and see how that works
That'll upset so many "cheating" players they will have nowhere to hide
'"
You have a point to some extent in that some (most) players will bend the rules if they can get away with it - some more than others depending on the character of the player.
In the same way individual refs will adjudicate in their own style, some are very keen on watching for certain infringements whilst apparently letting others go.
A case in point is that when defending their try line players must be behind the line and for a few weeks refs penalised everything. Now, some defenders are actually stood with both feet in front and get away with it.
In the England NZ game there was a blatant "tackle in the air" and punch to Tompkins. What did the ref do?
Answer me the question I posed earlier:
do you honestly think an australian ref would send off and australian prop in the first tackle of the game as per Morley?
With 30 seconds to go, australia score the winning try, but there is reason to doubt the grounding. Does the aus ref put it to the video ref (ganson) or call it a try?
I have watched sports for many years and believe that winning is so important to the aus psyche that when it really comes to the crunch it even infects their officials.

Even simpler: the RLIF should grow some and institute a rule stipulating neutral refs.

With an Australian as the RLIF chairman? Aint gonna happen.
Technically they have got a neutral referee rule, but then you have that old chestnut that always crops up whereby if a neutral referee is not available for one reason or another (normally because they are "Amateur Andys" according to that **** Geoff Carr), then the referee appointed is based on "merit".
How is "merit" defined though? You have two comps in England, and the one referee per game, but only one comp in Australia and two referees per game.
At the end of the day, in this situation, there is a competant neutral referee in Leon Williamson, so the Aussies will just have to like it or lump it.
Hayne will just be blasé about his bias towards Australia. Ganson, after reffing the Ockers twice will start to feel the pressure so he'll feel he will have to bend over backwards to give the Aussies everything, especially as there has been more scrutiny in the ref appointments for the final than for the group game. Alibert - well, the less said about him the better. It's got to be Williamson that referees, though the Aussies don't seem to think that if he does ref the final, it will be to their advantage as he's used to reffing in the Southern Hemisphere.

| Despite the comments from our puerile Aussie friend here, it looks simple enough to me:
1) Neutral ref should be appointed
2) If one of the finalist objects to a neutral ref, they should have no say about who gets the job instead.
As for 'we should have the best ref for the final', apart from the obvious question [i' According to whom? '[/i on this logic 'we should have the best' should maybe apply to the teams as well? On this basis, as Aus and NZ contested the last WC final, we should 'select' Aus v NZ for the 4 Nations final, never mind the actual results.

| Says something about the Aussies that after 30-odd years of crushing superiority, they still try and work every angle to get an advantage. Reminds me of Bill Murray's character in Kingpin.

Which automatically disbars any Australian referee. We've had far too many "patriotic" refereeing displays over the years.
It's a straightforward choice between M. Alibert or Leon Williamson.
If the Aussies are going to bleat on about French Referees not being acceptable and not wanting amateurs, they might like to get some Kiwi refs into the NRL.
