| Quote ="Clearwing"Pays the mascot's salary, I suppose, and I understand the thinking. However, marketing to this age group means little if they can't be retained. I was always less than convinced by the claim of some Hudds fans that playing Sunday afternoons was great in that regard. Yes, they might have attracted, say, 300 young kids that otherwise wouldn't have gone but how many of those translate into paying spectators a decade down the line? Whereas the Friday night clubs appealed, I felt, more to an older audience (often with a shandy or two inside them) that appreciated a slightly edgier experience - and offered a more immediate return in financial terms (yes, yes, yes, they could/can be a total pain in the booty). Not ideal, I concede, but dumbing the whole thing down to infantile levels does run the risk that the kids attracted in that way simply outgrow that experience.'"
There is some research floating around somewhere (I can't recall where right now) that suggests that kids have formed their "sporting allegiance" by age seven. Whether or not they do translate into paying customers at age 17 and 27, what's important is that emotional 'hook' that ties them to the club, and that's worth a hell of a lot.
I'm sure each respective club has statistics on the lifetime value of a supporter at various ages / stages of life (if not, they should have), and then it becomes a case of getting the numbers in, reducing the churn and re-engaging those who lapse. The latter is easier to do once you've established that emotional tie.

Nothing like a bit of success to regain those lapses fans.
A team winning trophies will work far, far better than any "marketing mans" fancy name.
You may be right about it helping get the kids along in the first place though.
Mind you, although all pro football clubs have their mascotts, they havent gone down the same path RL has

Football hasn’t really needed to as it’s always been number 1 in this country. Although in other countries such as Australia and USA they have with their ‘soccer’ names. You have it in RU also and white ball versions of cricket with the ever increasing T20 competitions throughout the world. When you look at other team sports and throughout the world it’s actually quite common.

Dee Why (late 76), and I recall us calling them the doggies in the playground, tbh I don't know why, maybe the bulldogs thing was already in the wings as the dates are close. I certainly don't recall the Berries but I'm not saying you're wrong.

Every football team has a nickname though and many use this in their marketing. It's certainly a main part of the badge and therefore the kit.

| Quote ="bramleyrhino"Leeds currently have parents [url=https://www.therhinos.co.uk/fanzone/ronnie-the-rhino/throwing £110 a time[/url at the club to have Ronnie the Rhino appear at their kid's birthday party and £160 for their kids to run out with Ronnie on game day (and those packages are sold out). For the people that the "Rhino" moniker is really targeted at, it's anything but an embarrasing waste of time.
Wakefield dropped their nickname for two reasons. Firstly, it was a crap name that at best made it sound like an American High School cheerleading squad, and at worst a sleezy lapdancing club. Secondly, they spent too much time listening to the same old farts that they always listened to, instead of listening to the people that they might possibly be able to attract with the right approach.'"
What a stupid reply - one Wildcats is no more stupid than Rhino's, in fact slightly better, give it a rest.
Secondly and as ever you are utterly clueless yet you speak with an arrogance way beyond your knowledge. Since turning back to Trinity it has been met by universal acclaim across the district. Merchandise sales have roughly doubled or so I'm told though I only need to look to see it.
So mouth all mighty who are these people we would have attracted by keeping what you yourself are calling a stupid name.
You've utterly contradicted yourself. I'd say you had lost all credibility but you can't lose what you never had.

Yep agreed, and whilst they are only a nickname in football is it really any better than The Rhinos or The Bulls to be referred to as The Toffees or The Owls or The Cottagers just to pick a few examples.

It ultimately comes down to clubs creating that identity. Walk around Leeds and ask people what a "Loiner" is, and I suspect you'd get a lot of blank looks. The club needed something to distinguish itself from everything else called "Leeds", and "The Rhinos" is instantly recognisable.

Of course they existed, I think you've missed the point, they were unofficially known as the Rooster thats the point, same as Manly were actually Manly Warringa (spelling) but were often refered to as the Sea Eagle, Seagulls or even Eagles. What the NSWRL did was to adopt them as a marketing tool but they already existed in a fashion - Rhino's and Wildcats didn't.

I've always thought it was Dreadnoughts, if you look at my avatar it's a photo that hangs in The Ale House in Wakefield with Dreadnowts on it though so you may be correct.
