i would agree with you if he was truly weak under a high ball or with kicks but he is not. as proved at the end of the game then and with a couple of other kicks.
more space opened up in the 2nd half and Rangi chase got better for it but against aus and a lesser effect new zealand it will resemble the 1st half. Tom Briscoe isn't better than charnley either.
Burrows isn't big enough in defense against aus and nz, Inglis, jennings and sonny bill running at him will hurt us.
But much improved 2nd half well done England.

| 20-25 minute England blitz killed Fiji. They couldn't get hold of the ball. Still plenty of Inprovment, particularly when we're 20m out and we aren't running through defences.
Also fed up of hearing the referees whistles in this tournament. Every game has had about 20+ penalties.

| Taking the Wigan players off made all the difference. McIlorum is not so much a poor man's Isaac Luke as a bankrupt, destitute, poverty stricken, impoverished one. O'L did nothing of note. Farrell is not big enough at this level. I'm not sure of Burrow but you can guarantee he will be on the end of any half break. Chase & Sinfield grew as the game went on. Excellent defence from both too.

| I still can't see England beating the Kiwis, especially with both the Kiwi halves, plus Sonny Bill Williams, and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck in such devastating form.
I expect a resentful and bitter Sam Burgess to get involved in some really dirty play and fisticuffs as Sonny Bill makes a fool of him.

| Good win for England. Thought they bossed the field position and possession in the first 25 minutes and on another day they would have been a couple of scores up but credit to Fiji, they defended their line well and came back to go in front
The English forwards were always going to grind down Fiji though as they were making more metres and completing more sets, just a matter of time before the dam broke and England got on a roll
I though the front row were excellent and should be the prop rotation for the rest of the tournament. Westwood and Ferres worked hard again while O’Loughlin will continue to improve. Roby will be back at 9 for the quarter final and we may have seen the end of Widdop on the bench and Sinfield going to hooker, we will probably see Roby and one of Burrow or McIlorum on the bench
The halves continue to improve and Chase is clearly building confidence
All in all a good workout and a good win

| Im happy with that.fiji were always going to be a handful first half.hill was impressive when he came on.for me,I would start with him and graham with sam burgess into the back row.
Roby should get the 9 shirt back and Burrow again proved what most Leeds fans have known for ages, his best role is impact off the bench.on the whole things building nicely to one hell of a game at wembley in a fortnight.

Watch Rangi Chase go misssing against New Zealand. (The Kiwis will sledge him about not being good enough for New Zealand, and that so that is why Rangi picked the third best team to play for).

It's to be hoped italy don't qualify and play australia, in that case, as that opens the entire italian team up to that type of sledging.

That could work against NZ. The last time NZ tried doing that they lost.
If I'm McNamara I'm telling Chase to flip the script and wind the Kiwis up. They don't have the composure that England do - look how average they became when Samoa and PNG wound them up - and we should exploit that.

If I could muster up the motivation, I would quote some of the crazy and deeply inaccurate predictions you have made during this world cup. In the meantime, I'll probably just rest easy that as an avid England fan you are tipping the kiwis if they meet in the semi's. This is very encouraging

Agree, also pleased that they managed to up their game after a sluggish start.
my only concern is that if we get an easy game against France, it will mean we've had 3 easy games in a row before we face the Kiwi's and could be a bit rusty as a result. Could have done with a tougher workout today to keep us on our toes.

Roby back in
Burrow, graham, g burgess on the bench
Not sure how should be the 4th man on the bench
The rest picks itself.
Watkins is not doing enough and it's such a shame hardaker isn't available now because the only other option is ablett who could be a better option to he honest.

Thought that was quite a physical hit out there to be fair.intensity was good throughout.i hope we play samoa as I feel they will provide a better work out for wembley.
We have had much better prep. Than the kiwis who have had a pretty much procession to the semi's.

Being a Hull KR fan I have no axe to grind with Wigan at all but I tend to agree.
Wigan are worthy champions - make no mistake about it. Their success has been based on basic high percentage, high completion rugby league aided by the least off-loads in the comp, superb preparation and a great team and work ethic with high intensity and collective work rate to win games.
However, as individuals, I think we're seeing that Tomkins aside, the rest of the Wigan contingent in Charnley, McIllorum and Farrell are not capable to stand up and make a real impression at international level.
We've seen Charnley storm down the right wing all year and he was my pick ahead of Briscoe prior to the tournament but against Australia when he had to really on himself to make telling contributions, he was found wanting where as Briscoe has proved he can create opportunities for himself and his team mates rather than just finishing off tries like a flat-track bully.
I read that Farrell didn't miss a tackle until round 9 of Super League which is a phenomenal stat and every coach in Super League would want to sign him for his superb defence and insane work rate but at international level he's merely a passenger - even a player like Ferres is proving his individual qualities have value at international level.
McIllorum has been described as "tailor made for test match football" by McNamara; a statement I initially brought me round to why he's been selected in the squad but today showed that whilst he tough and uncompromising, he's simply no where near this standard of rugby league. The difference in England's performance from when he was off the field compared to when he was on was truly alarming. There's Roby, Burrows, Lunt, Hodgson and Houghton just off the top of my head who are better hookers and offer far more than McIllorum and if he plays again in this tournament then McNamara wants his head testing.
The two grains of hope that I cling on to as an England Rugby League fan are:-
1) I don't think Aussie's pack can go toe-to-toe with ours IF we get an even share of the ball and
2) The Kiwi's seem to have poor scrambling defence IF we get behind them often enough.
Of course when it comes to the crunch it will probably be the same old, same old. But at least this time I genuinely feel the team can at least compete at the same level with Aus and NZ so at least as England fans we're starting to be entertained.
