| Quote ="wrencat1873"Tbf, the Wigan game was a foregone conclusion and it will take time for Salford to settle, even when they have all of their new squad together.
However, Hull fans will be really disappointed with being well beaten by Leeds. So much expectation and comfortably beaten.
It is only round 1 though.
The 2 attendances last night were at opposite ends of the scale.
Just over 15,000 at Leeds but, only just over 5000 at Salford and this was against one of their best supported "local" rivals.
Is this because of lack of ST sales prior to the start of the season or apathy towards the game ?'"
Salford's Home Tickets only went on sale 2 days before the game.
no season passes or season ticket info has been released yet .
so 5,383 at such short notice wasn't bad . Especially considering the chances of the Home team making it a contest were slim .
Salford looked like the team thrown together without a pre season , yet only went in 0-16 at the half , Despite fielding Wigan's Jack Murphy at fullback who took 30 mins to remember he was playing for the home side.
Leeds- Hull Game was televised, that would have knocked 3-4K off the attendance. and was close for 60 minutes until Hull got tired from having to run around on all that grass...
early season fixtures are usually unpredictable with a few lop-sided scorelines . but so is the NRL:-
Canterbury 30 St George Illawarra 4
Sydney 0 Penrith 18
Gold Coast Titans 6 Melbourne 30
North Qnsland 42 Parramatta 6
Parramatta 6 Penrith 39
Warriors 26 Gold Coast Titans 6
Melbourne 44 Sydney 4
All taken from the 1st 4 rounds of 2012

| Quote ="NtW"Why do you assume you would draft players at 20-ish, like in the US? Obviously you would draft before they go to a SL club's junior squads.
Increasing the number of junior players wouldn't level things up-the best would still gravitate to the top clubs. As long as the top clubs attract the best juniors and biggest fan base they will stay at the top, regardless of the cap.
For me, there's too much inertia in league placings. We need to look at how to solve the causes of this. A draft might be one option.'"
So you want to draft players aound the age of 15-16 then? Example, at that age a talented 15 year old from Yorkshire is drafted by Catalans or London, is this teenager meant to move down south or abroad at that age?
Some players have done it in their junior development (Sinfield from Oldham joined Leeds) but for many the possibility of perhaps a Hull youngster having to travel to Warrington/Saints won't be suitable.

| So because of last night's 1st Round scorelines that means the whole season is going to be same old same old?
Hull drew with Wire and Hudds beat Wigan away to start last year.
2 years ago Wire lost to Hudds at the Magic Weekend opener, Quins also beat Catalans and Crusaders racked up a 42-12 win over Salford.
Neither round a true indicator of how the season would go.

| From 2006 - 2012
1st Round average winning margins
SL = 12.3 pts
NRL = 11.7 pts
The 58-0 thrashing that Wire gave Quins in 2010 proving to be the real difference maker.

| Winning coasting margins of 30, 36 and 42 points so far.
It is to be hoped there's a significant competitive improvement in the rest of the fixtures this round.

So what about the players that came into their own after the age of 15?
Are they cast aside because they missed the draft that possibly happened before they'd ever played a game?'"
They'd be free agents, available to be picked up by any club. The point is that the majority of players get picked up young by clubs, but the best kids gravitate to the top sides.
These are just my musings on the matter. Maybe it's being looked at, or been looked at already. Maybe other people don't think it's an issue. But in 17 years of SL we've had 4 champs, and only 6 in the GF (or 7 in the top 2 in the league table). I don't think that's good enough, and I'm offering my thoughts as to something I think could help change that.
A draft may well not work (the NSWRL tried it in the early 80s and it flopped), but it could be something worth considering.

| Quote ="NtW"Whoa, there. There is way too much sense in that post-it seems you understand the game.
Don't you mean to blame players for throwing in the towel when it goes wrong? Or referees for seeming to favour one side?
In seriousness, your post hits the nail on the head-we have an issue with 'certainty of outcome' in the sport, and upsets are harder to come by (in football, bag a dull draw with Utd, and your got a 'good result). It means we need to work harder to have a better spread of talent, and allow this years struggling clubs to be better next year.
We need to realise the salary cap doesn't do this and I'm starting to bang drum for a draft system.'"
The Championships have the bonus point system to reward effort at keeping the score close despite a probable loss. Maybe the SL should trial it also in an effort to keep closer scorelines.

Professional pride should be enough, I don't think it's an issue. The game goes through phases and will evolve naturally, without the need for changing the rules every two minutes.

But the rules were already changed. Just for the benefit of the championship, and it does work quite well I think.
