| Quote ="NickyKiss"He had a nightmare along with the rest of his colleagues that night. He did actually show some good touches in the centre in other games but I agree that he's nowhere near ready to play internationally in that spot (although he's a shout for back up winger in the squad now Eden looks to be done).
Watkins and Percival for the centre spots imo with back up being provided by either Shenton or Gildart. In all the mediocrity of our season Gildart has been sensational (when fit) and looks a 'proper' centre. His footwork is superb and he's laying try's on a plate for his winger. His big test this year was opposite Jack Bird in the WCC and he was fabulous. I'd have no issues with Shenton being selected though. He's a steady pick and you know exactly what you get with him.'"
If you're going to play a left-edge you'd be stupid not to play Gale, Shenton, Hardaker all together, who know each other's games. Percival should be in the squad too but I think they're my three centres of what will be a 24-man squad.
Eden may yet make the World Cup. His season may be done upto beginning of Oct but World Cup is Oct/Nov. May have time on his side in that regard.
Full-back: Hardaker, Lomax
Winger: Eden*, McGillvary, Hall
Centre: Shenton, Watkins, Percival
Halves: Widdop, Gale, Williams
Props: Hill, Walmsley, G Burgess, Graham, Taylor
Hooker: Hodgson, McShane
SR: McMeeken, Whitehead, Bateman, Farrell
Loose: S Burgess, O'Loughlin

| I agree that there are huge benefits to a group of players from the same club playing together due to the relationships they have already established with each other.
The only downside is that England won't play anything like Cas. A lot of Cas' attacking moves come off the back of winning collisions and getting quick play-the-balls. Australia will be very happy to give penalties away if they lose the collision and back themselves to defend sets starting close to their line as opposed to clearing the ruck and allowing the roll on.

| Eden isnt good enough to be waiting on, especially in a position we are relatively strong.
McShane isnt international class for me, too slow and his style fits Powell, not sure it will fit in to an international set up. I think Walmsley is great at SL level, not agile enough for international RL.
Hardaker, Lomax
Hall, McGilvary,
Watkins, Percival, Shenton
Gale, Widdop, Williams
Graham, Burgess, Hill,
Hodgson, Roby
Whitehead, Ward, Bateman, McMeeken
S Burgess,
With 4 places up for grabs.
1 is O'loughlin's if he wants it and his body is up to it
then one of J Burgess or Makinson,
At least 1 prop, if not two or possibly a utility.

| Quote ="tigertot"I think Gildart is definitely one for the future, but to describe him as on fire is a gross over-exaggeration. 4 assists, 6 tries, 8 clean breaks, 18 tackle busts is mediocre. Shenton's are 17, 5, 13 & 34. Not that I am suggesting Shenton should be a shoe in either.'"
He's played 7 and a bit league games (the bit being when Ferres took him out) so his record stacks up. He also took on Jack Bird in the WCC and came away with a try and a top performance.
I'm not turning this in to a Shenton vs Gildart debate at all . In all honesty I probably would select Shenton as back up centre (Watkins and Percival should be nailed on starts anyway imo) but Gildart is having a great season (when fit). As pointed out he's not the biggest but I think that helps him. He's never been physically dominated in a game to my mind and his defence has got better and better. He's certainly one for the future of but quote for this World Cup.

| Hardaker should be fullback he's our best in that position and let's not start the whole tournament with the philosophy of selecting players out of their best positions: it has never worked for England/GB in the past. Daryl Clark should not be forgotten at 9, had a pretty good season personally in a Wire team that has underperformed all year.

Ratchford deserves to be in squad based on form, but especially utility value.
Clark has done enough, again, maybe not as a starting hooker though.
Hill.. will most likely miss out. Currie should be in squad based on ability alone, but may come too late.
Think that'll be it for us in the England Squad.

If Eden is fit, he should get in the squad. He's outperformed both Hall and McGillvary.
As for McShane, I'm pretty sure he's just as quick as Josh Hodgson and Roby now he's lost his pace. There's only Daz Clark who probably has more pace and while his form has improved, it's been nowhere near comparable. You pick on form and right now, McShane is the form English hooker in the comp.
14 try assists, most of any hooker in the comp
7th most tackles by a hooker (but given we've defended less than other sides that explains why it's not more)
4th most tackles from marker by a hooker
People like Roby may be better defensively (less missed tackles), which is why he'll probably get in by McShane deserves his shot and his link play with Gale is a huge advantage too. There's a reason why Melbourne and Australia have been so dominant and that's because the spine of the team have played together loads.
Slater-Cronk-Smith and before that Kimmorley was in the halves.

For less than a season, in a team performing much better overall, playing a style of rugby much more suited to his game and completely different from how England will be playing in the world cup. Hall and McGillvary are miles better choices for international rugby.

Agreed.
Both Hall and McGillvary would have scored at least as many trys as Eden if they were playing where he has been all year. Plus they both offer more coming away from their own line. Hall's international record speaks for itself. He has to be left winger in my opinion.

You can lol so you like but McShane has been quality this season and deserves international recognition every bit as much as Gale and Hardaker.
I would worry about Eden defensively on the international stage.

| Ratchford probably did enough in the game vs Samoa to get the utility spot. I'd definitely try to get Joe Burgess in there as well as he's got real pace and an eye for a try.

McShane has been good this year.
As has Daz Clark who I think has kicked on again in quality. He just barely gets a mention now since Sky seem to only be able to concentrate on a handful of players at a time. It's like they want to promote a handful of "stars" and don't mention 85% of the league'a players (fans get swept up in that too).

Greg Eden will also be nowhere near the England team. Despite finishing trys for fun this year, he is well behind Hall and McGilvary.

| James Roby should be in the squad imo. He looks refreshed when I see him and it seems to have been forgotten just how good the guy is. I'd be tempted to start him with Hodgson on the bench. He may play in the NRL but he didn't crack any pots in last years four nations.

At FB Hardaker is the obvious choice with Ratchford backup.

And yet all the other players you've mentioned can't even look good in what you call a league weakening on quality.
So if they can't perform well at a SL level, why should they be considered for international recognition when they aren't in form? I know it's a team sport but there has to be some fairness. You can't have your cake and eat it both ways. Surely if they are such quality a weakening league should be a piece of wee-wee.
People also picking on size, Burgess and Makinson aren't particularly big or strong.
McShane is playing well in a team playing well, so therefore why not pick the players playing well, to create a team playing well, who are full of confidence and riding a crest of a wave. McShane is also named in the Elite Training Squad again, so I'm glad experts in rugby league are recognising how good he's been.
