| Quote ="JonM"Depends whose figure you believe. Sky Sports gave it as 2697. It was given out as 4000 in the local media. 2697 seems more credible looking at the pictures.
Either way, Toulouse are currently the second best supported team in the championship and they are certainly getting much bigger crowds than they did playing in the French league last season. And no stadium issues as they potentially have 2 or 3 options available. Judging by the number of posters around town and the number of Widnes jerseys in evidence two days before the match, there must be a good chance of the crowd on Saturday topping a couple of the day's SL games, too.'"
When I announced to Fax fans in the Melting Pot in Toulouse on the day after the game that the crowd had been announced on the net as 2,700 it was greeted with total disbelief as no-one could believe that it was anywhere near that number.

| Quote ="Maximus Decimus"The last season did see a marked improvement though and it was only being out of the relegation race so early that resulted in it being less than 7k. We only won 6 games out of 28 that year and 2 of those were against Leigh (one on the last day of the season).
If we had the success of Wakefield this year it's not unreasonable to think this could be nearer 8k. Despite doing well on the field their crowds have took a downturn again, the highest they have managed this year is 6578 and that was the first day of the season. Last year they had 3 games over 9000 and another just under it.
I see what you're saying about Widnes struggling to ever get 10k but surely Castleford are a good indication that this is possible. With a similar stadium I think you would be pushing 10k yet your population is less than ours. It's about tapping into it and I think we have people in charge that could.'"
I just don't see how it'll happen.
Completely different cultures in the towns and you will have to spread to suceed, most 'true' Widnesians moved on a long time ago, you only have to go to Penketh or Sankey in Warrington to see that, full of them. I've been to Widnes a few times recently for various things and it's just full of trackies and fecking ugly chavs who couldnt afford to go to a match even if you doubled their benefits

I think you'll find that 'Chavs' are quite ubiquitous. They come from all over the country and have all kinds of accents. High fashion, petty crime scum are not restricted to Scousers or Widnes. There's probably more Liverpool over-spill 'Chavs' in Warrington than there is in Widnes anyway. Home grown Warrinton 'Chavs' undoubtedly out number them all.
WTF you think it proves anyway I cannot fathom?
What an awful, pointless thread this is.

The bit from Tarry saying they're the only one with planning permission, land and three years ahead of any club is laughable.
Had that been true, the things would have been built by now. They're not clearly.

Quote The fact is there are five clubs involved in this and not just us and what you have to look at is what is the position of the other four clubs.
"Only one club has planning permission for their stadium.
"That’s us.
"Only one club has secured the land for their stadium.
"That’s us. '"
Other than there being 5 clubs involved where else is there a fact in that statement?

It was a bit of a joke, nothing too serious.
My general point was the average bloke in Widnes these days isnt interested in Rugby League.
ofc there's more overspill in Warry, we're about 5 times bigger than Widnes

Done a poll have we?
If you're just going to generalize, then we could say the same thing about every single town with a Rugby League club – and it would be quite true.
Yet again it is a totally meaningless point. There is clearly more interest in RL in Widnes than in many other towns with RL clubs, including several now in SL.

| Quote ="GSF"Not having pop at Fax here but last time in SL their crowds were dreadful, many below 2000.Admittedly they did have a poor season winning only one game.'"
Our crowds declined steadily from 2001. It's an area where we are weak on - as well as a lack of a big money backer. That said, we have a very progessive board who have put on-field matters first this year and (so far) it's paying dividends. If the board have got the staying power i think we can build towards 2015.
As for the stadiums - yes, it's only 1 to 2 criteria points but when clubs are neck and neck in other areas it could be decisive. If the RFL are serious about stadia upgrades they should NOT be listening to any empty promises. They should be able to inspect a stadium and for that, you've got to build the bloody thing, not just stand on a "proposed" site being photgraphed with a hard hat on and looking like a dildo. Hopefully the hot air spouted by these clubs in 2008 will make the RFL realize that talking about a stadium aint good enough anymore.

I made the assumption based on plenty of people I know in the area who have moved to the area and have no interest in League.
I never said you weren't a super league standard club at this minute, I personally would have had you in before Salford but most clubs in Super League have more development potential than Widnes imo which is a very small town.
If you look at the teams you're 'competing with' Cas have a bigger fan base than yourselves, wakey will always struggle and both Salford and Celtic have more potential than you upon completion of a new stadium.
Even if Widnes enter SL in 2012 I can't see you ever filling your ground for games, i'd be happy to be proved wrong.
We'll see

I live in Widnes and there most certainly is a widespread interest in Rugby league. Obviously having a SL club in the town would spark even more interest. Few clubs, bar the biggest, could attract as many fans as Widnes if they had spent as many years in the lower leagues as Widnes.
Quote ="Dico" I never said you weren't a super league standard club at this minute, I personally would have had you in before Salford but most clubs in Super League have more development potential than Widnes imo which is a very small town. That’s quite respectable. Considering we don’t have much ‘development potential’ Warrington seem to like plundering our service area. You don’t exactly produce a shedload of players yourself do you? Kettle pot black.
Quote ="Dico" If you look at the teams you're 'competing with' Cas have a bigger fan base than yourselves '"
Not much bigger. They have had an almost continuous presence in SL to help that too. They also manage it with a population just over half that of ours – so it’s not all about population then?
Quote ="Dico", wakey will always struggle and both Salford '"
Two city based clubs with large populations. How can this be? Surely, if your theory is correct, they should be getting bumper crowds every week? Perhaps it’s not all about population eh?
Potential is all well and good, but it doesn't pay the bills, produce players, or build stadiums. And in RL it rarely ever materializes.

That came on the back of a Championship Trophy (1986) and a Challenge Cup Trophy (1987) and a Challenge Cup appearance (198icon_cool.gif. Without doubt they were our glory years. The only disappointment was that we didn't bust the 10,000 barrier too often. Some quality players were recruited thereafter until the mid-nineties when our Sugar Daddy Tony Gartland left. It went downhill after that. I really fear for the Bradford Bulls in this regard. They too started their ascend with meagre crowds of 3,000 to 5,000, rising to 12,000 to 13,000 at their peak. Are they facing what Halifax did in the nineties? Hope not for their sake - it saps your faith.
Anyway, i digress. Finally, we will have a pretty decent stadium by December 2009. Now we need to fill it

The timing is uncanny
Put it this way, in four years time i hope to witness the following:
