gateshead were averaging 3000 back when the SL average was that. i see no reason why with similar marketing they cant get much bigger crowds.

Well they're not bad to be honest, last few seasons having pooe seasons and people still coming through the gates.

I think when Wigan, Saints and Wire visit we could psh the 10K barrier but then that average is decreased significantly when teams like CC and harlequins visit.

Depends whose figure you believe. Sky Sports gave it as 2697. It was given out as 4000 in the local media. 2697 seems more credible looking at the pictures.

Either way, Toulouse are currently the second best supported team in the championship and they are certainly getting much bigger crowds than they did playing in the French league last season. And no stadium issues as they potentially have 2 or 3 options available. Judging by the number of posters around town and the number of Widnes jerseys in evidence two days before the match, there must be a good chance of the crowd on Saturday topping a couple of the day's SL games, too.

...never mind that the whole league had an average of 3,000...when was our average 3,000?

Easier said than done. Should we kick out teams that do not have a chance of making this? Are expansion clubs separate?

The last season did see a marked improvement though and it was only being out of the relegation race so early that resulted in it being less than 7k. We only won 6 games out of 28 that year and 2 of those were against Leigh (one on the last day of the season).

If we had the success of Wakefield this year it's not unreasonable to think this could be nearer 8k. Despite doing well on the field their crowds have took a downturn again, the highest they have managed this year is 6578 and that was the first day of the season. Last year they had 3 games over 9000 and another just under it.

I see what you're saying about Widnes struggling to ever get 10k but surely Castleford are a good indication that this is possible. With a similar stadium I think you would be pushing 10k yet your population is less than ours. It's about tapping into it and I think we have people in charge that could.

In the year 2000 they averaged 5714 having a team similar to where Wakefield are now but the overall Super League average was lower. It's not unreasonable to think they could get 5500 if they were in again.
