Corner flags as well, It took more skill to score in the corner when you couldn't touch the flag, It was much more exciting and entertaining as well imo, We see Mackinson get massive fanfares because he scores these amazing tries in the corner while crashing through the flag yet if the former rule was still in place he wouldn't have scored 80% of the tries he's scored, Bring back the excitement and watch the game get back to where it should be.

Just sort the play the ball out, that's all that's needed in terms of adjustments to the rules.

For all of our moaning we tend to forget that a lot of these changes came in because of perceived problems at the time. There never has been a time when everyone thought that we had got everything right. Seeing the nostalgia for contested scrums and striking at the ptb suggests that we have a poor recollection of just how untidy the game could be. You could get away with it when refs could just wave play on but today every aspect would be scrutinized on video.

Exactly, people were complaining that the play the ball was too fast and there was too much scooting from DH and it was causing blowout scores. RL fans will always find something to moan about.

I dont remember anyone ever complaining saying the PTB was too fast, they might have said scooting was boring but not the speed of the PTB

I agree with the corner flag comment. It was a lot more difficult to score in the corner but............... i personally prefer the rule as it is now.

One rule that IMO does need to be changed back is concerning the awarding of a try if any part of the arm is in contact with the ball as it touches the ground in the in goal area. The rule change removed any need for control of the ball. We now see some ridiculous tries awarded where a player has clearly dropped the ball but as it falls backwards part of the arm nowhere near the hand brushes it as it hits the turf, or the tip of the little finger is brushing the underside of the ball which flies away immediately on touching the ground. The player clearly has no control over the ball and in any other part of the pitch it's a knock on. To see such scores awarded following a video review just looks abysmal.

The old downward pressure rule no longer exists as you say. I also dislike how long you have when over the line to try and turn over and ground the ball. Same thing happens on the halfway line and it's a penalty.

I agree to a certain degree, having 2 refs and a an agreed set of rules and interpretations across the whole game would help.
In terms of actual rule changes, I'd definitely go back to how we used to refer trys to the video ref.

Weren't there rumours that the NRL might go back to one ref due to costs involved?
I don't mind rules being the same, whereas now we have SL rules, NRL rules and Itl rules which to me is plain daft.
MY personal gripe is the ref indicating to the VR he thinks it's a try or no try when he can be totally unsighted and hasn't clue either way. Just leave it to the VR who is a qualified referee anyway.

There are not enough match officials to have two referees in our game. If touch judges helped the referee's more, there should be no need for two referees.
