No they don't. They're on less per year than the new Sky RL deal.

| Quote ="Cripesginger"So the facts are:
RL will get around £40m per year from 2017 for providing viewing figures of around 300k.
Meanwhile RU get just short of £51m per year NOW for providing viewing figures of around 65k. What were the RFU thinking inviting several tv companies to make bids?
Nigel has certainly socked it to BT and the RFU.
Meanwhile the French RU have around £60m per year for the next five years. The suckers played canal + against BeIn and others.
When will these RU lot learn?'"
You think both RL and RU are on a pay per viewer basis? You think that’s how it is priced? That’s so naïve I wouldn’t know where to start.
Whats funny about this is you have used the example of French RU to back up your point, when in reality it absolutely destroys your own argument. BeIn sports were contemplating court action because FRU accepted a LOWER offer from Canal+ because they had a wider viewing platform.
And just a point order, the Premiership rugby deal isn’t worth £51m a year, it is a £152m a year deal for 4 years. That would be £38m a year. A proportion of that, thought to be about £20m is for a European competition, So that becomes £132m for 4 years, or £33m per year and it has caused huge problems in European Cup rugby and could possibly destroy the HC, as well as limiting exposure to about a quarter of ours. Frankly, for once, compared to our TV deal, the premiership Rugby one looks poor.

Given the absence of a comparative Super League attendance thread on this forum in 2014, it's fantastic news that it is to be replaced by a SL TV audience thread oozing in weekly positivity. I am confident that such a thread shall prove attractive to all those who found it emotionally difficult to cope with the prospect of another SL attendance thread
It is also fantastic news that the RFL are back in business again reporting the news on TV audiences for SL. It is to be hoped they are also back in business reporting news on SL attendances this season because they were conspicuous by their absence last year.
The quoted 353,000 Sky Sports 1 TV audience for last weeks Wigan V Huddersfield game is mightily impressive. However, the percentage increase figure in the RFL press release does raise a question... namely... it smashed all box office records by representing a 38% increase on the audience figure for the opening SL game last season between Leeds and Hull.
According to the figures at www.barb.co.uk, the TV audience on Sky Sports 1 for the Leeds V Hull opening SL game in 2013 was 188,000 therefore 353,000 must surely represent an 88% increase as opposed to a 38% increase? I'm sure that the RFL would be more than keen on reporting an 88% increase on last season as opposed to a more modest 38% increase?
It's also worth noting that the RFL had absolutely nothing to say about the TV audience on Sky for the opening SL game in 2013 between Leeds and Hull. Would that be because the TV audience figure of 188,000 was 25% less than the 251,000 tuning into the opening SL fixture of the season between Widnes and Wakefield in 2012?
I wonder if the RFL can confirm the source of their TV audience figure for the Leeds V Hull game in 2013 which would be around 256,000 (based upon 353,000 being a 38% increase on last year) when BARB's published audience figure was 188,000?

I agree there is certainly more interest shown around the sport in general at the minute, folks watching SL to see who will make the drop at the end of the year and which championship clubs are in with a shout of the 24 next season.

You are now suggesting you can say what I am thinking (inside my head )....that is just sad. Do you think you can read thoughts? Gosh!
You see tv companies do have an interest in viewing figures...honest. Ask an adult, they can confirm it for you.
I have seen many posters call others naïve. so you doing so after hundreds have done so is...deeply moving.
I take your point re RU being over 4 years. Still a better deal than RL despite the later being a more popular on tv. I guess RU have learned that it helps to speak to more than on tv company. When the RFL get a CEO /board who understand this principle our game will be better served.

| This news is obvisouly great, but it does highlight some massive shortfallings elsewhere in our sport, mainly the sponsorship problem.
If SL and RL is so well received by the viewing public, why have we had problems securing sponsors and why are the sponsorship deals generally lower than those at our nearest sporting comparison?
Also, if the TV audience does so well, and the World cup was so well attended, why are we struggling to get crowds through the gates at many clubs?

Eh?
Union TV deal = £152m for 4 years = £38m per year
League TV deal = £200m for 5 years = £40m per year

so those MM viewing figures, I just add them all up for a total of 440,000 hence the Wigan & Huddersfield figures of 353,000 is actually a lower number of viewers than 3 years ago..... blooming RFL spin I say, game's in crisis, some RLWC legacy !!!

Or you could do it the Gutterfax and AP way by taking just one of the figures and then dividing it by 4. Since some tv viewers will have watched more than one game!

Not really sure what your point is, are you insinuating the RFL are making up the 353,000 or that someone in the press office made a mistake working out a percentage?

Try dropping an email to the RFL press office and see if they can explain it, as this might give the answer, alternatively we can continue to debate without ever actually uncovering anything like the truth.
