| Until unlicensed bookmakers in Asia show an interest in Rugby League this won't be a problem.
Bookmakers love football, it's such an unpredictable sport, I cannot see why unlicensed bookies in Asia would touch RL the margins are much lower than football margins.

It was simple English (might be lost on you I don't know).
There was (as is now the case) a delegation from major sports that attended the meeting. RL was one of the 5 that attended.
I put no emphasis on the "the" at all. It was simple English. "RL was one of the five" not "RL was one of [iTHE[/i five" how you wish to read it is up to you but don't try scoring any bonus points at my expense. I simply put I digress as it was not an issue for discussion. HTH.
As for the rest of the thread, I feel that to state that we are not known in the Asian market is to turn a blind eye. As things tighten up with one sport other avenues have to be explored. Its clearly very lucrative so all avenues will be looked at as a source of income, if you are one of the organisers. Lets hope it doesn't effect RL but we have to be prepared for all eventualities.

| There have been betting coups in the past regarding drop goals being the first scoring play in both codes of Rugby. Martin Offiah kicked one. I'm not saying that particular score involved a bet. I know a touch was landed by a Celtic nation's fans in the five nations a few years back.
Nothing crooked about that. Bookies prices have temptingly rated the likelihood of a drop goal as high as 66/1 or was it 33/1? against 7/4 for a penalty, 11/4 the try etc.
Handicap betting (where the bookies set the amount team a starts with and the amount team b needs to win by to beat it.) means people can attack /defend accordingly to land a bet at close to evens (10/11) .
I've no evidence that a struggling side has seen it's handicap and bet against themselves or that a winning team has backed themselves to beat a forecast winning margin.
Given the dire financial condition of some clubs in the game perhaps there are elements which may make certain individuals vulnerable and of course there is greed.
There are guidelines in place to discourage people directly involved in the game stepping out of line, but it would be highly naive to think it doesnt happen anymore or wont happen again as it has of course happened and will again, it is human nature.

| What are peoples views on rugby league players betting on other rugby league games that they are not invovled in? Should it be banned?

If they've no involvement it's hard to ban, but since all superleague players know each other quite well, who's to say they're not giving each other inside info? Bit of a tough one

As a punter, I have no problem with it, but can see why, to the wider world, it is sensible for sportsmen not to have a bet on their sport.

| Let's not forget that the bookmakers have to actually offer a market first. Some of these scenarios are just daft. The most obvious one has to be the first scoring play.

Remember Tommy Martyn mention something at a Sportsman Meal, how him and Long had put money on the first point coming from a Drop Goal at Leeds a few years back (which apparently nearly came off, had it not for a charge down, IIRC, and Leeds running around to the other end to score a try).
