How long a residency do the RLIF rules require? Had he met that before the Exiles game? Was he qualified to play for England that afternoon?

| it is only the train on squad, he might not make the cut or the team but this will probably help with his visa application at the end of the year

| Maybe i'm old fashioned in my views but in my opinion to play for England you should be, well, English! Wasn't he man of the match for the exiles against England just 3 months ago? Not for me i'm afraid, my interest in international RL has just died.

| All of this roughly translates as "I'm never going to get picked for NZ while Benji Marshall is around so I'm going to have to settle for England if I want to play at international level".

No idea, that's why I was asking the question?
Seems a bit strange to spend your time waiting out your residency by playing against the team you want to represent!

| I hate to ask but is it a cynical attempt by Rangi to ensure that he can get a VISA following his court case? (if it could be an issue at all)

Yes. Nationality is different to being eligible to represent.

It is three years, I just looked it up.
It seems to perfect way to prove your abilities whilst waiting for your residency qualification to come through.

My interest in International League has not (and never will) die but it has certainly been dented a little with this news
I must admit I am disappointed to hear this. He is a quality player but we are already debating which half back partnership England should go with from Lomax, Brough, Widdop, Myler, McGuire etc. Despite the transition of Brough from Scottish to English (which I don’t agree with) at least all of these are representing their own country
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not coming over all jingoistic, it’s simply we have some half back options for a change and I don’t think we are desperate enough to call on Chase

No. One says he's eligible to represent in representative sport, the other says what his nationality is. They are very different things. SL's overseas quota system is different again to both of those two matters, and dependent on where a player was trained.

| What a joke - no doubt his approach to McBanana was prompted by advice from counsel, who will have stressed the value that playing for England will add to his visa application. Who knows, it might just be enough to net off the negative effect of trying to punch someones face off?

Got to agree. Slightly taken the gloss off the 4N anticipation

Unfortunately this had crossed my mind too, hopefully there's nothing in it other than a burning desire to play for England developed over a massive three years in the country.

Seen as no Cas players got picked for England, every Cas fan was cheering on the Exiles and Rangi Chase that day. Nothings black or white anymore.

| So maybe with a number of Antipodeans playing for England via the residence clause we may even win the Four Nations, or even the World Cup.
What a hollow victory that would be.

| Like most, I'm shocked, saddened and appauled that our Country has resorted to this. So what if RU and Cricket do it, RU play with a lighter ball which makes kicking easier should we do that too??
To play for England you should at least have English parents, then at least you would have some feeling for the country.
If Rangi had an offer from both NZ and Eng which would he have chosen? I know the answer he'd have given before realising he's actually just not THAT good.
As for Danny Brough, he was born in England so fair enough but with the World Cup coming up he should have been encouraged to play for Scotland so to boost their chances of competing.
By the way Michael Dobson has been here 3 years shall we partner him with Chase?

| The sad thing is, I'm not even surprised.
No wonder McNamara was so keen for the Exiles game to happen, it's being used as a shoot-out for an "England" place.
