If I were heading the RFL I would muster as much cash as I could to entice Sean Edwards to the role – a RL legend with a huge competitive instinct, experience of coaching international rugby teams and experience of coaching on an intense tour... apart from anything else, great publicity to have him back in the game. Fair enough, he has been a bit disconnected from the game and the newest coaching technique but in a full time role, he could get up to speed quickly enough

looking at the names in the frame i cant imagine any of these were the first choice of anyone.

I think having John Kear in the frame is showing a lack ambition by the RFL, but McDermott, McNamara and Agar?!?!?!? As much as id like to see the back of McDermott at Quins, as an English RL fan I draw the line there. Come on RFL sort it out!

There is a coach out of contract at the end of this year. A proven winner with international experience. Why his name isnt in the frame im not sure. But Richard Lewis should be moving heaven and earth to try and get Brian Mclennon

Take this with a pinch of salt if you wish, but on Radio Humberside last night (the sportstalk programme featuring local press/experts) it was alleged that Wayne Bennett had been offered the job and had accepted it. However he wanted to bring over his own backroom staff, this was declined by the RL and as a result he won't be the next coach of England.

Kear had the most thorough interview you could give for the England job about ten years ago when he actually did it.

I don't recall it going too well.

None of the candidates inspire any confidence, if we are to have any hope of competing with/catching the Aussies we need to get someone who know what they are going over there, not SL coaches who cotton on about 3 years too late when the NRL players have made another giant leap ahead.

The question isn't really "who will be the coach" so much as "will the RFL change the system"? Currently the GB/England coach:

(I seem to remember Phil Clarke standing down as GB manager because he was not convinced that the clubs and the RFL truly support the national side. And things don't seem to have improved).

This means that the odds are stacked against the coach irrespective of their ability at club level. To succeed in the current environment probably requires a completely different approach.

Agar won`t get the job,apart from anything else he is not media friendly.
"Us lost `cos us didn`t perform" would need translating in some parts of the country.

i do not know which bit is the funniest the idea that Bennett would take the job or that the RFL turned him down because he wanted to appoint his own assistants.
