| Quote ="Ken Acker"Yawnion is having a bit of a tough time of it recently in NZ but mainly because of the overall poor performance of their teams in the "super" 14. If they were winning, even winning in a boring manner, there would be far less grumbling amongst their followers. What the ignorant bigots in the Australian RU press failed to mention when they were gloating about Gasnier and SBW chasing the money laundering Euros in France was that the All Blacks were losing far more players along the same route. If you were recruiting for French RU in any case it is far more sensible and risk free to chase successful players from the the same game, hence the talent drain from NZ.
I wouldn't under estimate the considerable support for yawnion in NZ, especially in the South Island - but lets hope RL can take advantage of the current situation and make some big steps forward.'"
a few years ago in a pub in auckland i was chatting league with one of the locals and he talked about a team on the south island to join the warriors in the nrl.
he also told me he'd love to see a origin type game north vs south island. how realistic and feasible would that be?

'" NZ is only a small place. Look at some of the states in the US that are much larger than NZ but only have one NFL team.
Adding more teams isn't the answer, especially until the Warriors are consistently geting good crowds even when they're losing.

If that SPARC report is to believed the NZRL prefer to play Kiwi games in Aiustralia because the revenue is much larger. I can't see the ARL willing to lose money, which is what they'd do if they played a game in NZ.

origin is the best RL on the planet.
why not showcase the best the game can offer to fans that arent converted, with a flow on to the local RL team?
we played an origin in melbourne and because of that the storms crowds rose straight after by 3000 fans and have stayed loyal.
its a way of promoting RL by using your best games to do it

it would depend on the finances of a bid.
melbourne origin is in a much smaller stadium thatn sydney, as are your games at suncorp.

taking a game to another australian state and taking it to another country are 2 very different things dally.
as for the island of origin, are there enough players from the south island to raise a good team?

melbourne arent part of the origin concept
but they have an nrl team
nz arent part of the origin concept
but they have an nrl team
its exactly the same concept.
its used to grow RL in a market where theres already a team
i think it would be massive
the kiwis would go crazy for it
and its something that union can never match

So by this reckoning you would agree that RL is dying in Sydney too?
NSW Waratahs get crowds comfortably better than any Sydney RL team.

the waratahs got 20,000 for a recent game
indeed their best game of the year has been 23,000 or so
the roosters got 25,000 on the weekend.
the dogs got 20,000 on the weekend
the sharks got 10,000 on the weekend
so yeah i agree RL in sydney is clearly struggling

NSW Waratahs vs Queensland Reds - 28000.
You can't just pick and choose your attendances to prove your point. A Union fan could have said 'League is dying in Sydney because one team only got 10,000 and the Waratahs got 28,000.' That is effectively what you are doing in reverse.
The fact is that the Waratahs still average more than any one Sydney club. However to say it is bigger is ridiculous there are a lot more Sydney clubs.
The NZ Warriors do not average more than all the RU clubs it NZ and there are a lot more Union clubs so to suggest it is bigger is ridiculous also.

the waratahs current crowd average is less than the sydney roosters
but you are thoroughly correct, the sydney RL clubs crowds are struggling
the bunnies are only expecting 20,000 this friday night as well.
