| Quote ="UllFC"You are right that location is a big factor, luckily in Hull we moved to pretty much a centre spot between The Boulevard and Boothferry Park to suit both fanbases with good train and bus links. Moving to an out of town retail park hasn't been good for many teams in Football. Fans are hard to win back when they have got out of a habit, and for some being able to wander from the Pub, or meet their mate at a bus stop etc is part of the day out.'"
Indeed, as i say, Winwick road link to the motorway is fantastic (apart from the traffic) and having central a stones throw away as well is a massive help.
All the town centre parking as well.
One thing that does get forgotten about, is removing Bridge Foot aka spaghetti junction from the traffic equation, coming from the north it was virtually impossible to miss if you were heading to wilderspool.

Yeah I was there. It was about minus 5 IIRC.
And let's be honest half of those who turned uo at The Willows for the Catalans game did it to say I was there (exactly as they did at the Grand Final). I'm under no illusion we get small crowds.
BTW, you and Mr DogPlop are conveniently missing the point that we were forced out of the Willows by Super League who said the ground wasn't up to scratch but have since allowed Wakey and Cas to remain in their ultra modern abodes. Those s are every bit as much to blame for the shambles.
Edit: To clarify I'm referring to those s as in SL and not Wakey or Cas.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing and perhaps you should have held your ground (pun intended) and redeveloped the Willows. The 8k average attendance to support your move to the new ground was a club figure as I understand it and was always a big ask.
A triumvirate of you Cas and Wakey would be better placed to resist the mandate of new ground requirements if you worked that ticket together
Btw the previous poster saying that some local authorities should support stadiums like we Wire were lucky well yes we are but Salford's stadium is owned jointly by Salford City Council and came at a cost. The location although not as central as the Willows is there such a thing in Salford, wasn't a big surprise either I just think that you the supporters were victims of a combination of desperation and pipedreams

5000 at wilderspool climbed fairly quickly to 11,000 over a few seasons at Halliwell Jones but it wasn't great success on the pitch..
Wire didn't get to a play off final until 2012 but had an 11,000 average crowd by 2005
It was the demographics, the rise and rise of soccer in Manchester........ and the move by Salford to a wasteland............against a fast growing Town with a top RL club as it's leading footy team.........

I agree entirely with this, that 10K attendance was for the "occasion" only
Only 3,458 turned up at the penultimate game before that at the willows/weaste...........only 5,424 at the opening of the new Barton ground
In their great 2019 successful run to the grand final improving attendances only managed to peak at 5,393.......
Then weren't the coach and best players easily picked off?

I don't remember Salford being forced out, only the fact that they got an opportunity for a new stadium that Cas and Wakey didn't get.
They understandably took that opportunity of their own free will AFAIK. Sadly it did not work out It remained to be seen whether Wakey moving to Newmarket outside the city and on waste ground along the motorway could also have been a big mistake??

Out of interest what was your previous username on here? You've obviously been around on RLFans longer than 2 years so always interested to know which previous alias/es you got banned under (like LeBron, Jean etc)

There was pressure from the one-size-fits-all licensing criteria, which distorted priorities and to varying degrees and in different ways harmed several clubs. Those clubs still bear some of the responsibility but they did have the Sword of Damocles of losing their place in SL hanging over them - that isn’t how it turned out but it was very much how it was sold.

| The three most important things about a RL stadium is firstly location, secondly, location. I'll leave you to work out the third.
The HJ is superbly located, easy access, abundant cheap/free and easy parking, bus/rail on its doorstep, surrounded by pubs/restaurants/takeaways. We are a minority sport and have to make it easy to attend. Yet in the early days there was talk of our new stadium being built in Limekiln, an out of town wasteland near Burtonwood services. 95% of speccies would need to drive or take 2 buses to get anywhere near it. Thank god we had people in charge to guide them.

| Looks dire for them. I've always liked Salford but they are really struggling now and it seems this move at best will see them on a nomadic journey like London, unable to lay down any proper roots and having the crowds dwindle. Would it be better for Salford to voluntarily drop into the Championship if that's the case, in order to make it easier for them financially?

A voluntary relegation won't be required. Luckily from a playing perspective we've been smart the past few years and not paid over the odds for players (like in the Marwan years). So we don't have sh*tloads of debt. If a move takes place there are a couple of options which will probably suit us for a few years until a longer term solution is available. There are lots of good things going on behind the scenes by the likes of Paul King, Ian Blease, Paul Rowley & the foundation.
The stadium is a bit of a millstone in the current scheme of things so potentailly this might be a blessing in disguise. As long as the club stays within the Salford boundary then we'll be fine.

Researching this it seems the move was simply for a better stadium and it was first proposed 2005 so not much to do with licensing at all, that came a few years later. No need to reply, just letting others know.....you were just having a cheap dig.....
