| The problem is that the coin toss has so much say in who wins. 5 drives and pop a drop goal over and it’s as easy as that. Basically deciding the game on a coin toss, which will never sit right with me. That has happened 2 or 3 times now just with Hull FC. The NFL has a great rule, which we don’t seem to want to adopt.

Yeah, at least licensing and the parachute payment were introduced for a reason. Draws weren’t particularly a problem in league games.
However, I think just throwing another point at it is really poorly thought through. If we absolutely have to have GP and a bonus consolation system, it should be:
6 points for a normal win, 4 for a GP win, 3 for a draw after ET, 2 for a GP loss and 0 for a normal defeat.
Quote ="wrencat1873"Which is ?'"
Unless the team that receives possession first scores a touchdown on that possession the other team gets at least one possession. So if team 1 scores a field goal on their first possession, they have to kick-off to the other team who have one opportunity to level the scores with a field goal, in which case overtime continues (now as sudden death), or win it with a touchdown. www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d8 ... time-rules
We’d have to change which team kicks-off after A drop goal or penalty goal in extra time for it to work in RL.

| Why are we coming up with complicating ideas? The one implemented in Ch/Ch1 is fine. Just imagine if a team sneaks 5th spot due to the 1 or even the 2 points earned. It's a good incentive to get something after a hard slog after 80 mins. Well that's my view anyway.

I agree about complexity, and would be happy with a draw and can see an argument for GP. However, this is adding something more complex to GP but also stupid.
Would you like an example scenario of how it could provide perverse incentives?
That team gaining fifth spot does so at the expense of somebody else. Unless we just say all teams reach the play-offs because losing is too sad to bear.

Then that somebody else probably lost 1 more game than the one who rightly earned a draw.

None. I'll say it again, there is nothing wrong with the one now,so no need to meddle. OK.

| We could now end up with a team making the top by virtue of beating a team by an extra 1 point earned in extra time when the team finishing 6th may have beaten the same side by 50 in normal time?

How many more times? You have earned that spot.....If there wasn't any golden point, you would get that point anyway with the draw.

There’s nothing wrong about a draw or the SL version of GP, that is just preference. The Championships version of GP is badly flawed.
To raise the stakes, let’s think about a situation in SL in which three teams are fighting to avoid last place and relegation. They’ve all won 9 of their first 28 games with one fixture to go. Team A and Team B have both been involved in two GP games earlier in the season, each winning one and losing one, so they’re both on 19 points. Team C had no GP games, one more normal win and one more normal defeat so they’re behind on 18 points, which seems unfair in of itself.
10. Team A 19pts, points diff -150
11. Team B 19pts, pd -200
12. Team C 18pts, pd -190
The good news for Team C seems to be that Teams A and B are playing each other in the final round of games and that should mean that any win for Team C is enough to secure survival. They’d overtake the loser of the other game and even if that game was a draw, they’d be ahead of Team B on points difference.
So Team C raise themselves for their big game and put in a strong performance, taking a 14 point lead with 10 minutes to go. The match between A and B is very tight, and word starts to filter through at the stadium that it is effectively now a relegation decider. The fans in attendance know the consequences of relegation could be catastrophic for their club, the players livelihoods are on the line, and everybody’s arithmetic is better than the innovative thinker at the RFL who came up with this idea. It is the situation the word invidious was invented for.

But you haven’t earned a draw, you have lost in extra-time. It isn’t sensible to have two different results for two teams playing in the same game. We drew with the team that won makes no sense.
Even if you treat it as a losing bonus point, every other team in the league loses out from a game they weren’t involved in... for no obvious reason. If there’s no appetite to determine a winner by GP, then just bin GP.
Any bonus point system has to be based on a cost to the opponent, even if it isn’t exactly balanced. The extra two points for turning a draw into a win in football costs the loser a point. A bigger margin of victory bonus point hits the opponent’s points difference. The incentive should always be for opposing teams to compete and never collaborate, and this increases the (admittedly non-zero) chance of the latter quite a bit.

It wouldn’t be funny if it happened though. And something like that could, especially if this system was in place for several seasons - I want this thread to either prevent it happening or to be able to point out that it wasn’t unimaginable if it does happen, so the responsible person(s) can’t use that as an excuse.
I don’t think they can take the point off Batley now, and they have to stick with it to the end of the season and just hope for the best. Then bin it ASAP.
I’m morbidly curious as to the process by which this got proposed and approved. How few people were involved that nobody thought ‘hang on a minute...’?

They have currently no intention of scrapping it. Last November it was announced that possible changes to the rule would be looked at ahead of the 2020 season including the NFL so called "right to reply rule", making it a win by only scoring a try and changing the points system similar to the new SL championship rule.
No agreement could be reached on any change so the current rule will continue. There is a majority opinion that the least likely change in the future will be to create 3 point games which the championship now has under it's rule.

You can say it. It is objectively wrong (apart from you liking it, which is up to you), but you can say it.
When there are three options that work (Draw at 80 mins, win-lose GP and 6-4-3-2-0), to come up with a fourth that doesn’t is kind of impressive.

Hull FC have won twice under Golden Point rules after receiving the kick off (Wigan away last season and Wakefield away on Friday) and once after kicking off (Catalans away last season). The latter was when Sneyd found touch from his kick off.

So the answer is stick to one point each in a a drawn game and no extra time that is what we have always had so stick to it

| IMO it should need a minimum of 3 points to take the spoils if we really need to take out the option of a competition point each for a draw. Nothing for losing in "extra time" if we have this, but a team has to score a try or kick more than one goal to win. 5 drives and a dg attempt makes a bit of a mockery of the "excitement" this is supposed to add.
