| First off I am for the weekend concept where ever it is held, what I dont understand is why all the negativity? I am gutted that I can not go as I am working. Why does the thought of 7 games for a pittance turn you all off? if you had to go to those games at the club grounds it would cost you over £125 plus travel let alone the time involved. Also every one keeps harping on about the resession well I am sorry if you cant aford to go that is financfial reality. This game of ours will not survive if we dont try & spread its no good having the best game if it stays in the two counties, SKY want to sell dishes & advertising accross the whole of the UK & as all sports the target audiance is middle income wage earners who can afford to finance full time professional teams. Union has no problem getting reasonable crowds to travel all over Europe to follow thier club then country & pay a dammed sight more than you do for league & yet they are still having trouble financing thier game. We had all better hope that the idea brings in more fans or we will loose out to games not a patch on League. It is just a sad fact that league has out grown its working class only roots like it or not it was a fact of going full time in 1995.

I walked inot my golfclub this afternoon in Derbyshire, and the RU was playing, no one had a clue that RL was on until I changed it over. Expansion has been tried for donkey's years, it will not work, cultures are defined many many years ago.

| The 'Magic' Weekend should be scrapped. It's just pointless. I can understand the idea if you are looking for expansion, but bloody Scotland? They haven't got a proper football league, Union is almost non-existant apart from the farce of their national side and there is no league at all.

That would be the May Bank holiday that the Soccer playoffs are played then?
The long and short of it is no soccer club will pay us £500k to rip up their pitch over 7 games, we would have to pay them, you think the game can turn down that sort of money before ticket sales are taken into account?

| Why are people so obsessed with attendences???? Do you hear cricket fans moan where they have crowds of like 5 people? Of course not, because cricket fans arent narrow minded, chip on shoulder idiots.
The fans enjoy the weekend away and the RFL makes a profit so why care so much about the attendence?

it would only go up against the league2 and league1 playoff finals, hardly huge competition, the championship one is the only one people bother with and that is now back on the monday again.
I'm not suggesting SKY have undersold us on the day/weekend, their coverage was good today IMO. I just mean that even if the magic weekend was a sellout with 7 amazing games we'd still only be getting minor coverage due to the sheer number of sporting events this weekend.

I can't speak for individual posters but there is strong evidence to suggest that the game's governing body is of the opinion that it works something like that. If it didn't it wouldn't judge clubs on their ability to fill stadiums to a minimum of 40% of their capacity, would it?

It wasn't hard, people with a modicum of intellect can tell the difference between a standard club game and an occasion where we spread the game to a new area.
And lets take this another way, how comfortable do you think somewhere like Elland Road would be if you had to spend 6 or 7 hours in there jammed in so it looked good on TV, no where to move, facilities that couldn't cope, an event like this needs room.

| Being a Championship fan who has never been to the Magic weekend before and whose team aren't involvedI was highly sceptical.
However, this weekend has been highly successful:
First of all to answer the questions about attendances, last year there were just derby games - Saints V Wigan, Leeds V Bradford, Hull V Hull KR, Cas V Wakey, Quins V Catalans, they are bound to be well supported, this year there was only one derby and the other games were well supported in a smaller stadium.
It's so refreshing to see fans of all RL clubs (not just SL clubs either) mingling together in a city when it isn't a cup final, I say keep it, Cardiff is more ideal for the fans and the games (closed roof an all) but Edinburgh is a much nicer city.

I think the football season finishes on the 24th may. The following weekend would be the whit bank holiday weekend. Therefore it would certainly be possible to stage a 'Magic' weekend at a premiership football ground.
To be honest, I'd love to be traveling to Cardiff or Edinburgh to watch my club and enjoy a weekend of complete RL. It's something different from the norm and would complement the season nicely. Whether it does anything for expansion is very debatable. The crowds look embarrassing on TV, compared to our RU rivals, and it does little to promote the game imho. Perhaps they need to ensure it is promoted better locally with free tickets for locals etc?

A half empty stadium either gives a bad impression or it doesn't. In fact if one of the primary aims is to 'spread the game' surely that's even more reason not to have a negative impression created.

You appear to be mistaking me for somebody who either has an issue the idea of MM or its location.
I'll leave it to those who know what the goals of MM are and have access to sufficient data to make a judgement to asses its success or otherwise. If you had simply sought to argue against the assumption that the figures quoted are negative rather than attempting dismiss discussion around attendance as irrelevant I'd have done exactly the same as I have with the rest of thread, ignored it.
On the specific issue of Elland Road there are few sports venues I have visited that I would be less inspired to spend 6-7 hours in.

The game's governing body will be happy then as they achieved a capacity of 44%.
Away from the obsessive microcosm of rugby league fora, most normal people have the common sense to recognize context. Getting a not too disimilar number of fans to travel a couple hundred miles, to a neutral venue, in an area the game is not as popular, than would have watched the same at home is not unimpressive. As is being claimed. It is in no way comparable to playing in an empty stadium at home, for which most fans only need to travel a couple miles.
