I have no sympathy with Leigh and am 100% on the players side. Leigh offered the players the contracts, in which there was no promotion clause or top 4 finish clause. The players will have mortgages and bills to pay, why should they give up their contract? It’s a short career.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but if the contracts of the two players involved would take up 40% of the budget, what’s he’s saying is they can in fact afford to honour the contracts they signed, they’re just going to hack off their nose to spite their face and choose to go bust as some sort of blackmail to welch on their commitments?

Who are the two players in question? Mortimer and Hutchinson?

Jean and myself were spot on with our predictions (ok Toronto didn’t go up) despite the ridicule we faced through the year. I guess there’s a lesson to learn, respect other people’s opinion or it could end up biting you on the backside.

40% of the 200K that we'll get from the RFL funding. That is all we are going to spend on players for next season (allegedly).
All the other players accepted 'pay offs' or signed for other clubs. Kevin Larroyer should be able to find another club, but Rhys Evans (on 80K a season) was injured constantly, but has a 3 year deal.
Derek Beaumont has helped create this 'mess' but he's not prepared (this time) to bankroll us out of it. It happened to one of the biggest clubs in Bradford Bulls, so the fact that it is happening to Leigh Centurions is hardly 'earth shattering'.

Ah, at last, someone who has seen the players' contracts!



Whilst I tend to agree that the contracts must be met by the employer, I am left wondering whether there is a clause relating to 'success'. (i.e. a top four finish, and participation in the play-offs) After all, a surprising number of players do seem to have accepted the 'deal' offered by the club, to terminate their contracts.

Its a sad situation all round really. I really do hope leigh pull through it and get back to competing in the championship

With promotion and relegation all clubs will end up playing at an appropriate level. However, should a financial meltdown ensue then a decline can rapidly accelerate, as we saw with Bradford, who are now back on the upswing. Changes at Leigh will take time to make a positive difference, and things may well get worse before they get better. I think most Leigh supporters would like all ties with DB severed so they can start the rebuilding process under the helm of a new owner.

Well I feel for the fans enormously as a Bradford fan. The communication they have been getting is extremely poor, and I'm not certain the most recent interview illuminates matters all that much. Objective one is to ensure Leigh continue to exist at all. Objective two would be to somehow avoid relegation. Sadly I don't see with the predicament they are in, the player deficit and coaching uncertainty that they can avoid the drop.

I know just how frustrating it is to start a championship season in the certain knowledge of relegation. Annoying but tempered in my case by the relief of having a club to support at all.

This was my take on that article too. DB has pretty much just admitted that they have the money to honour the contracts - he just doesn't want to.
I feel for the Leigh fans and hope this all gets resolved somehow, but I can't help but think that the best thing for Leigh Centurions would be for DB to have no more involvement with the club going forward.

I dont think he want much more involvement in the club after this season,i believe he has little interest in financing part time rl.The problems that the club have now are DBs problem and its up to him to sort them out.It'll be at that point the club can start sorting itself out.

The fans should not be asked to put money into the club until all this season financial problem have been dealt with

What a mess DB has got them into. He ought to honour those contracts and walk away but I suspect he has made massive loans to the club and he doesn't want to write those off. That's the sticking point.

Only RFL approved clauses are allowed in players' contracts. Whilst there is one to permit termination of the contract on relegation (at least from SL, not sure about C to L1) one for failing to make Top 4/promotion isn't.

Presumably the distinction is whether funds are there for 'Leigh' to honour those contracts, or if the funds belong to Beaumont? If 'Sporting Club Leigh Ltd' can afford to pay, then it simply becomes a contractual dispute between the players and the club. It's hard to see if that's the case given that the business accounts for Sporting Club Leigh Ltd [url=https://beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/04587402are more than a month overdue[/url.

The the ability to pay the players is contingent on another injection of cash from Beaumont (ie a director's loan) that isn't forthcoming, then as the link from Bullsye says, he has three options - sell, appoint a new director or wind the club up.

My gut feeling is that there is an element of brinkmanship to this and Beaumont is pressuring the relevant parties to agree to an arrangement. If the club were to fold, the two players in question would face a protracted and expensive legal battle to most likey end up with the square-root of Jack.
