| once again, my point was that a few years ago when penny burst onto the scene the media and especially SKY were all over him showering him with praise and bigging him up as the greatest young player ever, but jerry is doing the same and there is nothing about it in the media, as someone said the fact we aren't a fashionable club could have something to do with it? i wanted posters thoughts on why they think penny deserved more praise and media coverage than jerry not which young player at their club is great etc.

| Well for what it is worth, you should relish the fact that the lad is cracking on, under the media radar.
Many a good young'un has been ruined by a massive over hyping and a subsequent fall from grace.
Kevin Penny is an obvious one, but we (at Wigan) have had it happen to plenty. Shaun Ainscough is a more recent example.

| I was really impressed with him when I saw him against Quins, not just his try scoring ability but his game awareness, and strength and all round game was solid.
He's looked the best british winger so far this season and would even pick him for the full test team he's that good.

| cheers tuggles, i've said the same on our board, is it good for us that because we aren't one of the so called big clubs that jerry is just getting on with it without hemmings, clarke etc wetting themselves or would it spur him on even more knowing he's been talked up

For what its worth, i know he is a cracker. I have had him in my dreamteam from week 1 and I am reaping the rewards.
Just hoping he has a stinker next weekend.

that was because he was scoring highlight reel scorchers.
Seriously i would imagine all of his tries from 2007 were potential try of the season candidates.
i do like macgillvray though, i thought he was very good at cardiff, wins the floor and gets his nose through for quick play the balls very very well,
how tall is he, doesn't look huge, whether hes a potential target for high balls, thats what immediately comes to mind

| Been watching him closely and he's been devastating in attack. Carrying tacklers backwards time and time again. On this form he should be in the England squad mid-season.

| Quote ="meast"another 2 tries today, this kid is absolutely flying in the claret and gold.
i think most of us have known for a few years that he was going to be a good winger when he finally broke through, but who else is surprised at just how good he has been?
i know its still early days for jerry yet and i hope he doesn't become another kevin penny which im sure he wont.
who remembers the fuss and orgasmic reaction from the media over penny when he first broke into the warrington side? well compare this:
penny scored 13 tries in his first 12 games
jerry has scored 14 in his first 11 games
and yet i haven't heard sky or anyone else mention him yet penny was lauded as the nextmajor superstar in our game.
do you think this is good for jerry and the giants or just media bias?'"
think jermaine is going t be an awesome player but at the moment he aint making the headlines because at first kevin penny was intercepting everything and scoring tries from far out (making him look better then he was) compared to finishing moves off....

| Try scoring isn't a clear indication of how good a player is, Ade Garder has a great record but he's pretty awful. Tom Briscoe has only scored 29 in 56 but I would take him over any of the wingers mentioned in this thread so far.
That said McGilvary does look a very good prospect.

| I hope that Brown has a good reason to drop McGillvary and play Simpson tonight because he looks very average (but he is Australian so he must be good)

| i think its a good that he isnt in the media spotlight because when penny burst on the scene everyone was praising him and imo he got a bit to big for his boots because of the pressure to perform well every week and if this lad can fly ubder the rader he wont have that pressure on him

| Thats a bit unfair on Brown IMO. He's never been worried about dropping any player if a young English guy looks better. I agree, Simpson looked a wasted spot compared to how McGilvary has played recently but he must have had a good week in training because he wouldnt drop him on the basis you have put above.

Fair enough - I wasn't really having a go at Brown as he is a good coach who does turn to youth but I wonder why McGillvary wasn't played last night as he is in great form and Simpson isn't exactly a star buy

In that case then it may well be that Brown is bringing his young players through carefully and that will only be good for their (and England's) future
If that is the case then I owe Brown an apology
