| I'd also say, as badges and logos go, Widnes is my favourite.
Very professional and not too in your face. Could easily be a company logo.

We were known as Huddersfield Barracudas in the 80's and then obviously Huddersfield-Sheffield Giants more recently...

More examples in the the NRL I reckon as most clubs have been through mergers. Would be interesting to see which side has the seen more changes (purely for fun, not that it matters)

was not aware that St helens have dropped the saints, pretty sure its used thoroughly in there marketing and everyday use.
Hull sharks essentially where the old Hull club who ceased to exists after they were taken over by Gateshead essentially in s reverse takeover situation, post takeover/merger this Hull club is a new club, also don't think Hull were officially known as Hull Fc, affectionately they may have been referred to as Hull Fc, but think it has only been used in official terms as Hull Fc since the merger/takeover.

Don’t even think Hull had Sharks for that long, wasn’t it only about 2 or 3 seasons? Hardly can expect it to get over in that time. Personally the Hull FC name is one I don’t like the most, Just makes it sound like a football club. Be better as Hull RL or simply just Hull imo.

I thought they made them call themselves St Helens Saints.
They changed it back to St Helens as the name and Saints just a brand on the badge.
Any Sts fans confirm?

Done some reading up, Theyve also had the names St Helens Football Club and were briefly known as St Helens Rangers during the 1880’s

TBF if they did have that at one point that one is a bit daft. It would be like Wakefield being named Wakefield Trinity Wakey.

| Quote ="Shifty Cat"Bit of an overreaction hey. It seems I wasn't the only one not to know the history of that name - well, you live & learn but you'd have thought I'd had had some malicious dig at your club with that response.'"
Sorry nothing personal intended, however....
I don't think it's an over reaction when someone says words to the effect of, "We thought it would be a good marketing gimmick to go down to Old Trafford and borrow their name". A name bestowed on us by the French 85 years ago. The team was managed by the legendary "Lancelot Beaumont Todd" and had players like Original hall of famer "Augustus John Ferdinand Risman" immortalised in the statue at Wembley stadium.
We WERE a massive successful club with yes large crowds and plenty of silverware. During the 1930s Salford won three League Championships, five Lancashire League Championships, four Lancashire Cups, The 1938 Challenge Cup over Barrow whilst losing the final the following year to Halifax.
I guess History doesn't mean too much these days and the comments on here like "what do Salford bring to Super League" Irks when a club has a real history. Don't get me wrong I get it to some extent it hurts it's been over forty years since our successful team of the 70's and this year it's 50 years since we last visited Wembley, who can blame the Salford public for not bothering ? it also doesn't help being where we are with a couple of the worlds premier football teams on our doorstep, it's a hard sell. What do we have to look forward to this season ??? I don't know I doubt we will get to Wembley or Old Trafford but whilst I've still got a screw loose and Salford still have a pulse I'll be there with my kids.

| Its one of them - sometimes the monikers work - Cas Tigers, Bradford Bulls, Leeds Rhinos, Keighley Cougars etc
Sometimes they Dont - Wildcats, Blu-Sox, Sharks etc.
To each their own! Whats good for the goose isnt always whats good for the gander.

| Some of the names are bad (wildcats was the worst one, no wonder they got rid of it) but I more can't stand some of these tacky mascots clubs have, with Warrington's 'wolfie' easily being the worst.
Really annoying the way this piece of crap lines up with the Warrington team before kick off in their home games as if he's part of the side and doing stretching exercises as if he's getting a game. So cheesy.

| David Waite, the former initial top official and coach of Catalans, told me in 2006 that he had decided on Catalans Dragons because there was a history of belief in Dragons in the region! That is so weird!
Actually, that is a rationalisation by him. Everyone knows that David Waite played for and was formerly a coach of, the St. George Dragons in Sydney. I believe that David just wanted to have a link with his past.
But in any case it has worked. Everyone likes the name Catalans Dragons.

So nothing to do with St George (Santa Jordi) being the patron Saint of the region then, who according to legend released a princess from the clutches of a DRAGON??
I would have thought that a well educated and well travelled individual such as yourself living in Carcassone and steeped in all things within this part of southern France northern Spain should have known about that connection?
Ah well at least David Waite had a 'lucky accident' when choosing the name Imagine if he had previously been coach of the Rabbitohs the people of Catalonia wouldn't have had a clue

| I think you are both wrong and Jean is right. It's far more believable that the club just let the new coach pick the brand name on his own because he liked the one from his former club and that people in the area believed in dragons.
If Waite hadn't stepped in they could have been called Catalan Fairies at the bottom of the Garden
