On Saturday and Sunday BBC are broadcasting classic Challenge Cup finals. Sunday at 1:15 is their documentary on the 1968 'Watersplash' final.

Not a match I want to see again, not because of the final kick but the awarding of the horrendous penalty try. The 1979 semi final against StHelens is definitely one to cover albeit I believe the BBC only covered the second half then.

Remember it well. Pimp. That last ten minutes or so were unforgetable. The great sight of seeing John Burke being carried off on the shoulders of his team mates.

Went to the 68 final with John Burke's dad, he like me was a regular in the George on Eastmoor,, 3 of us went down in the landlords car.

In 1979 semi bill ashurst didn't play but played in the final, who did he replace?

Some memories should be put to rest and this is one of them . I saw it live but refuse to watch it again.
The try Ken Hirst scored has got to be one of the most exciting ever from a Trinity point of view. I've seen footage of that try several times but refuse to watch the remainder of the match that we were blatantly cheated out of. Despised Leeds ever since then. Their players at the time were totally arrogant and in fact when it was shown last year (to mark 50 years since it was played) there were comments from some of the surviving Leeds players and they were still totally bloody arrogant.
I want to throw up every time I see a Leeds shirt!

As I recall Paul McD was injured. Possibly replaced by one of the Rayne twins (The one that was in the first thirteen), the other was sub. I can't remember which was which.

Some cracking highlights today but I'll give the Hebblethwaite show a miss tomorrow.

I keep watching it on the basis that if I watch it enough times eventually that "penalty try" decision might be reversed, the RFL present us with the trophy, and we get an official apology from that lot up the road.

to those that have never read it I can strongly recommend former Wakefield MP, David Hinchliffe's book, "They Walked On Water". It's his own personal account of that day in 1968, and opinions on the match and what occurred. A local playwright produced a play based on the book and it was performed at the Trinity Cats bar a couple of years ago. Brian Lockwood played a part in the play. The book is available on a well-known internet auction site.

Like I’ve mentioned before, I can’t watch it, the telly cost me too much money to put my foot through it. Also the thought of my grandmother crying all the way back home, probably why I detest Leeds to this day.

Was there as well right behind the sticks. Sickened. I will try and watch it but remember the feeling of we was robbed. At least I have had the pleasure of watching Trin since 1960. So I have seen the the golden years.

Isn't this the documentary that Big Neil didn't like, as he didn't like the portrayal of Don. I think Foxy then didn't undertake some RL 'event' because of it.

I think you're right, phe13....likewise we won't be watching it either for the same reasons mentioned by others above. We watched it the first time around, last year, as I was only 3 in 1968, so wasn't aware of all the controversy, but it made my blood boil when I saw what actually occurred




We watched the other matches yesterday and it was unbelievable how many dodgy decisions went in Leeds' favour in the games that they featured in....nothing ever changes

I will be watching it, my dad went to the game I was was 8 at the time but didn't go with him don't know why maybe a blokes day out and didn't need me hanging on to his shirt, he passed away 27 years ago so knowing he was there will make me feel a little closer in memories, bless him remember he fetched home a rosette and a little trophy in which I took to school and at play times played for that trophy
