He was on a hiding to nothing, so he gambled on trying to intercept the pass. Obviously Smith read it and just kept hold of it.

When that happens you look a fool, but with men flooding in support and no other Wakefield man in shot it probably was the best chance he had.

It was a bit of a half hearted attempt (as it was for Burgess' try) but I think that's obviously what he was trying to do, and I don't necessarily disagree with his thought process.

I was just about to type that this score could be anything and Wakefield don't seem interested, but hopefully that try gives them something to fight for.

They look okay with the ball. In fact, on paper their side is on par with, say, Widnes. The effort just looks derisory. I can definitely see how they conceded 80.

Strange half of rugby. Wakefield have kind of jogged around looking like they aren't too bothered about the result, but mainly due to Wigan's own lacklustre performance they are in the game. Wakefield actually play some good rugby at times, it's more their commitment that is lacking. I hope the realisation that they could actually win makes them come out 100% in the second half.

I think it's a good game and Wakefield aren't doing too bad. As for Hall, he looked awful and clueless but I wouldn't want 3 Wigan players charging at me on a 3 on 1.

You should always tackle the player with the ball forcing him to pass.

In that situation you should charge at the ball carrier with your arms spread out, try to rush him into a loose pass or maybe knock down the pass. What Hall did doesn't often work, but neither does just standing your ground and making the tackle.

Wigan will still win tonight as they have too much quality and Wakefield's defence is so poor, but we're seeing why Wigan haven't won away for so long.


Whilst I think they'll still win tonight, you have to wonder how far Wigan can go if they can't perform away from home.

Of course they're not bothered. Webster said as much. At any other club he would've been sacked by now, but like Agar with Elston, he's best mates with Carter. As good as he has been for us, one of the daftest things he's done was give Webster a 3 year deal. He's agar mark 2 and worse. I just don't get it, when they stick to playing rugby they look like blowing the opposition away. But away from home they seem prone to constant brain farts (Tautai anyone?) and getting into pointless scuffles.

Owen, Hall and Riley are like a triangle of wasted potential.

It's baffling, at home they're arguably the toughest team to beat in the league. But head scratchingly frustrating away from home if you're a Wigan fan.

I don't get it, we're a totally different side away from the DW. The positive is I don't think its a talent issue and is actually more of an attitude issue which means when the big ones come round (Wire, Saints, Catalans etc) I think we'll be ok.

I thought we'd fly at Wakey tonight though in defence. We've not won away in 9 months and haven't won away in West Yorkshire in 18 months. They know that and have made reference to it and I would have expected far more.

I agree it's an attitude thing. What really struck me a t one point tonight was when Burgess went in for his 2nd try shortly after halftime. The team gathered around giving halfhearted pats on the backs and they just looked pretty 'meh' about the whole thing, like being there trying to pick up the 2 points was a tedious choir.

Agreed and the same for Leeds with their inane drums, out of tune unoriginal songs and tone deaf brass section. They don't care about others either
