Who knew Wigan were carrying such a big gap under the salary cap ?

Well, we lost Harrison Hansen and replaced him with Jordan James. I reckon there was a reasonable difference in those 2 salaries for a start...

Not to mention the loss of Tomkins & Richards etc last season. Also, if needed, Wigan could pay him sod all this season and make it up in the future.

Nah that Union convert allowance comes from the 'new player pool' clause. If they've played league in the past then they aren't given the allowance.

You are correct but there is nothing to say Wigan won't be paying him peanuts this season with a pay rise next that won't fall foul of the "spirit of the cap" BS.

I didn't mean the new talent allowance, I just meant simply pay him relatively little this year, then more in following years when they've got more flexibility with other players.

Not that I think Wigan would need to, as I said they had some big players leave last year that must have freed up some space and Tomkins is joining half way through a season anyway.

Good news for the sport, if he's the player that left wigan. If he's done a Lee smith/ Karl pryce then not so good

Ah the return of one of SL's biggest Grubs!

Hansen, Lauaki and Andy Powell all left the club after our last signing (Apart from a peanut earning Jordan James) came in so there's a good chunk. Add in huge earners like Sam Tomkins and Richards leaving and being replaced with cheaper options and I bet Wigan have still got room under the cap now.

That will probably be spent on upgrades for the likes of Burgess, Hampshire, Sutton, Manfredi etc.

I thought we'd all been assured by various Wigan posters that Tomkins salary only counted half for the cap for a whole variety of reasons?

Why is everyone so interested in Wigan's affairs. Its their business and they can do as they like.

A big name in RL? Surely you mean SL. The name has more to do with brother Sam than him. A dangerous attacker who could be a turnstyle in defense.

What the chairmen want... This is why rule by committee never works. If the rfl told em all to clear off were making the rules, there'd be uproar, but we'd be better off for it.

True but that is also capped at 50k - so there's 100k maximum - hardly much to write home about in the face of money from elsewhere!

its a bit of a myth that this is what the chairmen want. That document is based upon a review conducted by Maurice Watkins and was prepared by Nigel Wood, Ralph Rimmer, Blake Solly, Sue Allen, Jon Grant and David Gent. Largely it deals with things outside of clubs control (i.e the complete abdication of responsibility for expanding the game, the removal of any responsibility for the game outside England, the removal of any responsibility to grow new clubs)

The only thing the SL clubs really had to vote on was the number of clubs in SL, that was pretty acrimonious and a fairly bad-tempered thing with people walking out and allegations from all sides. This new structure and these policies will not work if only because one side really doesnt want them, the other side is made up of clubs which have been 'bought off' with free money (and thats not even addressing the fact that a lot of its suggestions are contrradictory and counter-productive)

And everything within the document had/ has to be voted on by the chairmen - you can lead a horse to water and all that...

The home grown cap cap is a classic example. An intelligent way to increase the cap, and encourages doing in so which is beneficial to England, chairmen end up taking a vote on "golden tickets" and an argument over marquee (without wanting to reopen that debate, read average Aussies) signings for so long it hasn't been able to be implemented... Imagine how long any suggestions of the rfl assuming more control would
last...
