Who will also have Garry Lo and Corey Aston on loan from Castleford, who are dual reg partners with Halifax.

The Dual-Reg farce is certainly in full swing already in the championship for the opening weekend. Making a farce of the compeition as it is going to be a lottery each week of what sort of side each team has out, depending on what players are released on dual-reg that week.

Dual reg has always been a joke the way the RFL run it.

Problem has always been how to give game time to players not in the first team but are too old for academy. The sooner ALL teams are running an A team, the sooner this farce will end.

I feel sorry for Dewsbury

They would have looked at the Sheffield squad, rubbed their hands together and thought: 'right lads, this is an easy two points'

Then the squad is announced with Lo and Aston, plus FOUR dual-reg players from St Helens (it's not just Bentley!) and suddenly its a different proposition.

Of course next week, when Saints and Can cop for a few injuries, they recall their players and whoever plays Sheffield next week has an easy ride.

To be fair to St Helens they did have a Reserve team but decided to abandon it as very few other teams did, and there weren't enough games to make it worthwhile.

The same issue arises with this season, If you look at the Bulls reserves fixtures on the site, we've only got 10 games. Aside from ourselves the only other teams are Wigan, Wakefield, Keighley and Halifax.

So only two SL teams can manage to run a reserve team, yet two teams in League 1 can manage to do so. Go figure!

Basically, if they make it compulsory for all SL teams then St Helens and, I believe, Hull and Warrington (among others) would be more than happy to run reserve teams. I believe that the main opposition comes from our old friend Mr Hetherington. He'd rather use Featherstone as his 'reserve grade'.

One of them will have to miss out. Rules state no more than 5 loan + dual reg players (and no more than 4 of those 5 can be DR I think). Point is still a valid one though.




Saints can recall, Cas can't. Again the rules. Minimum 1 month loan period for Lo & Aston, as with all loans.

Our players who didn't go out on dual reg to York last season were sent to play for St Helens reserves which was a bit strange

The SL teams moaning about the reserve team fixtures have made it worse.

3 more reserve teams would have enabled more fixtures.

Seems very short sighted from the SL teams.

Lets hope this changes in the future.

Plus if players are in their own club environment, coaching staff etc will be able to instill club coaching practices and ethics without it being dilluted at other clubs.

Amateur game is on its bottom as academies take best junior players and if they haven't made the grade they are dumped.

Bring back reserves ASAP

I guess that SL sides which are struggling financially will probably see sending lads out on loan or DR as the cheap alternative. Maybe the RFL should pull away that particular crutch? After all, much as we, and other clubs, have benefitted, it blows apart the idea of genuine competition in both the Championship and Champ1.

I can see Keiren Moss lining up against us in a week and a half. Didn't even make the 19 this week. Just our luck!

Surprising, watching the highlights of Wakey's game, Ryan Shaw was caught out of position on nearly all Wakey's tries.

It will be very interesting to see how KR get on this season. Early days yet but it could be a long season for them, especially if key men like Lunt and McGuire pick up knocks along the way.

If they have a bad season, on the back of Leigh's yo-yo back down to the championship last season, you would really have to question if one season is long enough to adapt to being in a higher division.

Not surprising about Shaw though. Vastly overrated in my opinion. Good goalkicker, massively average in all other areas.

Shaw was a good championship level player. Not sure he's SL level.

That's the decision they've obviously made regarding Moss. But I would have rated Moss above Shaw. Possibly not on the wing, but definitely at FB

To be fair, it must be pretty difficult to pick an effective, defensive (and legal) tactics against that Kid - he's one hell of a talent.

Just in case you're wondering, no, I'm not talking abour Ryan Shaw..

If I remember, Shaw wasn't even first choice for us when we were in the Championship, so how he pulled the job at KR (who were SL at the time he signed) I just don't know. As you say, good goalkicker after that, not much to say really.

Played 25 out of 33 all but 2 in starting positions. But personally thought Mullaney was first choice FB. With Williams and Uaisele first choice wingers until Caro and Clare arrived later. But he played all but 3 (Centre, Bench, Bench) either starting FB or W and all pretty much in the regular Championship rounds.

When it got to the Super 8's he was dropped completely until the last match against Halifax which shows that even Lowes saw him as a Championship player rather than one to get us to Super League.

What I remember of Shaw's time at Bradford was him having one stormer of a game at fullback and then living off that game for the rest of the season when he did nothing but kick some beauties from the tee. In fairness to that goal kicking, it was important to us on a number of occasions, including rescuing a near loss at Mount Pleasant.

Exactly my take on Shaw HC, but I guess Tim Sheens is a better judge of a player than you or I
