Quote The South Sydney Rabbitohs look set to snare the final Burgess brother with Bradford back rower Tom Burgess exploring getting an Australian visa, according to his grandmother.
With Sam, Luke and George – Tom’s twin – already at the Redfern based club, Val Deen (the Burgess brother’s grandmother) told ABC Grandstand that it will only be a matter of time before Tom and his mother Julie join them in Sydney.
“I’ve got a very strong feeling that (everyone will come to Australia) it’s just a matter of visa’s and that’s a big thing to arrange but eventually I’m sure once we’ve got over those steps, Julie and Tom will eventually be here,” Deen said.
The 20-year-old debuted for the Bulls in 2011 where he has become a regular in the first grade squad.
With Tom off contract at the end of the year, Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire refused to comment on the clubs recruitment but did say, “I talk to them and they know where I stand.”
While Tom weighs up his options, Sam confirmed that he has applied for Australian citizenship as has his brothers with Sam set to stay in the NRL beyond 2013.'"
It would be a shame to lose Tom, whilst he's a often error prone and drops of a few tackles there is definite potential there that should be in this team for a next 5 years, as he's shown on numerous times since he broke through. I said last season that we should have offered him a new deal after his strong breakthrough year, he will probably have felt his decision to stay was a good one and have been on a high. I now fear that the uncertainty surrounding the club and the lure of being with his brothers and mother together in Sydney will be to strong and we have left it to late and he will toddle on off to Aussie, scotch free and another quality youngster escaping our grip once again.

| They've just signed Jeff Lima. George hasn't made his debut yet despite injuries and I can't see Tom getting near the team. I don't see why if he stayed 2 years ago he would want to leave now having broken into the team and with his agent now back in charge of the club. I agree that when he said he wanted to sign a few months back we should have sorted it out.

He probably wont make the team, but i'm sure getting out there, being assosiated with that club, with his family will have a significant pull factor. Just hope it's not as much as the potential of playing for Bradford Bulls 1st team right now.

| Like the above post states. They have just signed Jeff Lima.
George isnt getting a game in the first team yet. Only luke & Sam they will maybe sign Tom if Roy asotasi goers.
Tom would not get into their team though so he would only play reserve grade. It would be better fortom if he resigned for 2 more years and developed.

| Can you blame him for "exploring the possibility of an Australian visa"?. The silence from Odsal is deafening regarding what the future might bring.

| Whatever Tom's future may hold, I'm sure we can be confident that his agent will do what is in the best interests of the club.

Indeed. Doubtless donating his usual fee.
But in Tom's case...in his situation to me it would be a total no-brainer, tbh.

That's a fair point. I had George as the (slightly) better player when he left for Aussie, but with Tom getting first grade experience I would be a bit surprised if he hadn't got in front. Tom is unlikely to improve as quickly (if at all) in the second grade in Sydney. I know he's got a fair bit of improvement to make but he's better doing it at the highest level he can play in.
