What does everyone think about the number of one year deals within the squad?

I think that Potter may be trying to create a mentality within the team of "I'm playing for a contract next year". While this just might work, what happens if we are struggling at the halfway point, and players start looking elsewhere. I know we have a good emerging set of young lads, but teams always need senior heads, players who know exactly how they need to play, and what they need to do. Are we running the risk of falling into another bad run if we don't have players secured?

Opinions guys?

I wasn't aware that we had a substantial amount of players on 1yr contracts. I think Herberts was based on seeing how well he did and settled before extending.

How's the protest going btw?

I'm there right now, with a placard bemoaning the lack of small and medium replica shirts, accessing this on my iPad.

I'm not sure about Scruton, his contract was for 3 years in 2008 wasn't it? That's 8 players I'm fairly sure of, there may be more though.

Nothing wrong with the one year deals IMO.

We also run the risk surely of players who do play well then wanting much improved contracts and/or having competition from other clubs that we can't match.

Its one of those with pros and cons. No point in not recognising the bad side of these deals.

Most of those on 1 year deals happy with I am.

I agree with darulgee. I see this years major overhaul as a very positive thing, because we have shed so called "dead wood", and replaced with able if not specacular players. However, I think that to progress we need continuity in the long run. We can't be starting every season with 11 new recruits!! Ideally 3 players a season should be the max IMO.

I'm sure MP and the board are very aware of this though, and hopefully there are plans in place for some early contract renewals. For me Scruton, Kearney, L'estrange and Finigan would be high priority.

If they'd given everyone three year deals like they did with Paul Sykes then people would be up in arms as well...

It's a no-win situation isn't it? If we hand out longer deals and then players turn out to be useless, then we are stuck with them and everyone gets on their backs. So we give out short term deals, and the same people then say that we run the risk of them wanting to leave for higher paying clubs.

So what can you do??

I agree. I think the set up of the current squad as regards years on contracts is as good as we could hope for. It certainly beats previous years when we've saddled ourselves with some very average players for long periods.

I don't think it's an issue yet - it'd be interesting to see how many players were offered 1 year deals and how many wanted a 1 year deal! It's not like we set SL on fire over the last two years!

Players like Raynor, Ah Van, Herbert are all risks. No point handing out a 3 year deal - if they turned out to be pi$s poor we'd all be complaining then.

see hall for a recent example of why always giving out long contracts can be not such a good idea. We've a fair number of players who are gambles for one reason or another. So the one year deals make perfect sense imo. I'd imagine we'll see the ones that look promising being re-signed sooner rather than later.

I don't see a real problem with it. Players are usually given one two or three year deals, so any given year you are going to have somewhere near a third of the squad up for renewal anyway. We have a few with chequered histories, either due to injury or off-field problems, so the gentle nudge of a one year deal is that we're hoping for something better. As I say, I can't see a problem.
