Melbourne-based Englishman Gareth Widdop has set his sights on playing in Super League one day, but is keeping his international options open.

The utility back, who is set to make his first senior outing for Melbourne Storm against Leeds Rhinos in Sunday's Gillette World Club Challenge, lost hope of playing for his favoured side Bradford Bulls when his family emigrated to Victoria in 2006.


Maybe if he isn't getting first team action would a loan deal be good for both club and player?

Well, let's see how he goes before we rush to sign him.

But should he do well this season, then I hope who ever is in charge of the England team considers him for a call up. We've been short of quality backs at international level for a long time

Be 100% sure of this. If he is been courted by Melbourne as an nrl fullback he will be lighting quick with a full skill set not like most of the English numpties playing at 1 over here!

You're absolutely right. There's a whole host of young Aussies who are fast and skilful, so for him to get in the Melbourne squad means he must be good.


It does say lost hope though, but I'd still like to see him play for us if he's any good.

Be careful what you wish for I have 2 mates who are storm season ticket holders and there is nothing storm fans and the club hate more than manly! I doubt widdop would want to line up with what his fans and team mate(and most nrl fans) refer to as manly scum.

Well, with McGuire there, we both may be disappointed and see a bright young talent go to Wigan.

Mind you, if he ends up playing regularly in the NRL, will he even end up coming over here?

He played for the junior kangaroos last year n got some glowing reports in the aussie media. Looks like he could be a good prospect for England in the future, but will have to wait and see. Would be good to see him play on saturday if hes in the team.

Look at previous people who fell into that category. We could be missing out on the next Chris Thorman, Keith Mason or the awesome Ian Sibbit! How could we possibly pass that up?
