We were stood in the Edmonton end and while we were suffering heartbreak and dejection the rest of the ground went berserk with jubilation as St Helens had got the biggest get out of jail card since Lazarus.



Looking back on the night, you have to realise that those inside the ground and the thousands watching in the pubs back home, it was something special.

Without taking anything away from the decision to elect it the best try, it was neither technical nor particularly skillfull, but it was immensly dramatic and will go into SL legend and the game needs these.

Precisely. The try was only scored because Saints disobeyed an edict issued only that weekend by the RFL not to take a pen until all onside. And it was never a pen in the first place.

Great drama maybe, great try? Not a chance, more a case of desperation paying off.

FWIW, my fave two tries were Hape at Knowsley Road in the Semi Final of 2005 and Brett Ferres for us at Headingley.



However the Leeds score in the play-offs this year (Donalds kick to McGuire) was an absolute peach.

That wide to west try can never be classed as a great try because of the terrible defence that allowed them to score.

What about McAvoy in the Challenge Cup? That was a peach of a try.

I thought that would have been reasonably obvious to most Sky Sports viewers, he does get rather excited when his beloved St Helens are on.

I don't have the best memory for things like this, but one Bulls one that does stick out is by Lesley. Think it was against Wigan at Odsal and he skittled about 4 defenders before crashing over. Oh and Paul Anderson against St Helens? Steamed over the FB!

McAvoy on the fly against Leeds. Was that in the 2000's? My memory isn't what it was!

... would have to be THAT try by Ellery where he beat the entire opposition team, 5 times each, and arced the whole length of the field to score near the corner.



Mind you we still threw away a lead to lose the game. That was of course McNamara's fault.

My favourite: Stewart Reardon at Old Trafford in 2003. Not technically brilliant, but after a poor first half it was the moment we took the lead, the Bradford fans raised the roof and my ears rang as if I'd been at a rock concert for the rest of the weekend.
