As for Steve...in amongst all the financially highly-rewarded mandarins and quangocrats getting gongs simply for doing (usually badly) the jobs we pay them to do, its refreshing to see someone deserving and inspirational like Steve getting a well-justified award especially for his charity work. Would he have got an MBE if he was not ill? I very much doubt it TBH. BP has already mentioned that it is about more RL players were recognised and that is fair enough. What sets Mr Prescott apart from most other RL personalities????? Illness.

He had two choices. He could have given in to his horrendous illness and let it take him quietly and without fuss. Or he could have fought it publicly, raising awareness and, at the same time raising cash to help his family and others in this incredibly difficult time. In my view, the first is by far the easier option, but the hero's option is the second, taking advantage of his public profile and putting himself through untold pain in the process.



THAT's what the award is for, not a sympathy vote. Should have been a knighthood.....

My uncle went through the same and did the same but no MBE for him. It is a silly award and it seems that such honours are given out for anything these days. Shame that they are now becoming fairly meaningless as they are being given away in lucky bags it appears.

The point I was making was that there are/have been others who, IMHO, are worthy of recognition - even if that means through what is becoming more and more a "political"/Political list.

It is all a matter of opinion in fairness and I just think that MBE's are becoming more and more devalued.

In that case, it's DIRECTLY down to his Mum & Dad - should they get the award?



They had him, if they hadn't - he wouldn't have gotten into the public eye through RL; been here to get ill; done the fund raising he has rather than sitting back / feeling (understandably, IMHO) that life is unfair when told he only had a few months to live and so use his public profile and RL connections to promote awareness and raise much needed funds . . . and so get the recognition he just has, as you identify as being [isympathy related[/i.



Though I suppose it could be down to his Grandparents . . . . who had his parents . . ..



Interesting to note now that what you intimate may be your beef behind all of this is that you believe the MBE is being devalued. How being terminally ill and using what time, effort, contacts and resources you have (as in Steve's case) can be viewed to indicate the undervalue of the MBE beats the hell out of me (but obviously not ME)

Examples of an MBE being devalued by handing them out to anyone.



Jenson Button - for driving the best car badly for half a season.

Jason Roberts?????? - for being consistently bad at football? What else - services to football agents given his multiple moves?

Beth Tweddle?? Why??

Last year they gave them to Christine Ohuruogu, who was pretty much a drugs cheat and James DeGale for winning a boxing gold?

Not forgetting other "deserving" cases such as David Healey for not being able to score in the Premier League and even Lawrence Dallaglio has an OBE, presumably for services to the Cocaine industry (alledgedly).

Even more telling to see that you're now majoring on the MBE being devalued.
