From the air the cheaper option looks better
Seriously though It's great to see such ambition from all parties involved. If it doesn't come to fruition at least the council in particular have shown some ambition for the future. This project could be catalyst to greater regeneration across the city as all it takes is one large idea or project to start everything else rolling. This would attract investment in the city and then the next idea comes along.
It would also (whether it's as a sabre rattling exercise or not) one way or another free Bradford City from their oppressive rent repayments and they could then be able to bring in the players that attendances that they get should permit.
Two professional sports teams on the up helps to improve the general feeling around the place.
Go for it I say.

| Quote The ‘Do Nothing’ option provides a no cost short term solution, but fails to realise
the ambitions of the Council and its partners. Furthermore, there may be a
detrimental financial impact as the Council continues to operate at a less efficient
sports centre, through the potential loss of a Super League team in the District and
the economic impact of potentially lower intake for some courses at Bradford
College and Bradford University. In addition, the Odsal Sport Village seeks to raise
participation levels and the long term positive benefit that this can have on rising
costs to the NHS and local PCT is uncosted, but potentially significant.'"

I'm a bit confused. Which one is the one that's got the green light?
Edit: nevermind, I've bothered to read the report. It's the left one.
Bit of a shame as I like the curve of the stand on the other one. But the corners are open on the selected scheme so I'm sure there's room to expand should we need it

The one on the left, which requires about 4 million tonnes of infill.
The one on the right uses the same space as at present, you can see the hospitality place still there

Interesting, & I'm not being flippant. But there is a big demand for holes in the ground to deposit spoil*. It's shame they got rid of the pile in the city centre.
*Landfill tax currently £40 per tonne (plus landfill charge itself).

| Quote ="tigertot"I have no knowledge of the scheme or the procedures the council has in place for employing consultants or contractors but some indication of what is usually involved & why there is no chance of it being ready for 2012;
Advertise in the Euroepean Journal for expressions of interest from architects, engineers etc interetsed in the scheme.
Send out a pre-qulaifcation questionnaire to all applying.
Read through the hundreds (& there will be) of responses, score them all in accordance with pre-published criteria, shortlist.
Send out invitations to tender to shortlisted consultants.
Read through numerous 3" thick submissions, each going to hundreds of pages, score them all etc.
Arrange interviews for all disciplines.
Interview.
Notify all unsuccessful consultants, giving them time to legally challenge the decision if any of them feel they have been dismissed unfairly.
After that appoint consultants.
Prepare schemes.
Cost.
Value engineer back to budget. Repeatedly.
Submit planning application.
Decide on procurement strategy for appointing contrcators.
Advertise project in European Journal for contractors (any in Europe can submit).
Go through the same process as for consultants.
Get tenders.
Value engineer.
Value engineer.
Redesign.
Appeal against onerous planning conditions/refusal.
Value engineer redesign.
Talk to favoured contractor.
Redesign.
Argue for a year over costs of 'provisional' items.
Start on site.
Discover asbestos & other contaminants in ground.
Stop job.
Notify HSE (14 days each time).
Remove contaminants.
Value engineer as already over budget.
Contractor goes into liquidation.
Retender.
Repeat above.
Appoint new contractor.
.............
Complete in 2020 with the popular side only half covered & portakbins for a hotel.'"
All of that. But then again Yorkshire Water won't be running it so it may get done quicker.

| Maybe the council are in a win / win situation here, they are seen to be a "good council" by giving the go ahead of OSV. Knowing deep down it will be highly unlikely to happen.
Speaking personally, something similar but far less ambitious than this, should have been undertaken at the time of the last development.

The council gave the go-ahead ( and planning permission ) for the Sterling Capital scheme and have been pilloried by Bulls fans ever since National Goverment put an end to the scheme.

Its a bit silly tbh, the more i look at it the more it looks like a pipe dream, the cheaper scheme was far more likely to succeed.

| I think it will get built.
But it will be at least 5 years from now, and cost at least 15 million more.
They'll muck it up it that much that any chance of a similar scheme happening in Keighley will be reduced from a 1% chance to 0%

Since Keighley is just part of Bradford anyway, why don't the Cougars use one of the lesser pitches at the side of Odsal?

£15m over budget - is that all ?? It'll be £88.7m unless they avoid VAT ( @ 17.5% ) plus they've admitted this is all "based on a non-complex construction" and not tested in the construction industry.
I think if it only cost £15m more it'd be a remarkable achievement !!
