To be honest I thought they overdid the old fogies. The Olympics is essentially a celebration of youth and to have so many wrinklies there for both the opening and closing ceremonises looked a bit out of place. The John Lennon tribute worked better than the live OAP's.

Apparently they declined to appear as they were "not in tour mode". The Stones don't do anything half heartedly. Should have featured in one of the medleys though.

Seriously, my daughter, who has experienced an eclectic musical education, though she doesn't know it yet, said "I didn't know all that music was British". It's one of the only things I am still proud to say we lead the world in.
