| Quote ="Adeybull"I can't help but think that a few people have a somewhat two-dimensional view of a captain's full role, and of his necessary attributes and qualities?
For example, would Sir James have made a good first-choice captain? Remember Presley's immortal words (when Robbie was off the park and Jimmy had the armband) "Where's Robbie? I want to talk to someone sensible"?'"
I'm not sure what influence the referee expects the captain to have in a game, to be honest. How many times does the ref, after a long discussion, say "go tell your lads" and [ithen[/i, barely giving the skipper time to get into the defensive line, blows for the penalty to be taken. Some chance to "go tell the lads".
Clearly the ref expects other players to know that they've been ticked off, and presumably why, simply by the fact the captain was called over. That being the case, it hardly matters which player he speaks to, or very probably, even what he actually says.

| your not trying to suggest the ref gives advantage hoping opposition score and said captain gets chance to echo his words behind posts otherwise he is a useless cog are you?
i think we need a change of direction but who? It is not really anyone who stands out at the moment. I like disco, raynor has shown great attitude even when chips are down, morro would fit the bill.... Hindmarsh i note(not that i believe we will get him) is desperatly trying to avoid wooden spoon with eels as captain.

I wasn't really referring to what happens during the games - because I agree with you. I was alluding to what happens AWAY from the games. The big part of the captain's role that we don't get to see. My point is that many people are judging who should be captain, understandably, based largely only on what they see in the 90 minutes. I brought Jimmy's example up because it exemplified something we DID see in the games, but that might have given the odd pointer to the rest of the time we do not see? As in...if a referee said he did not regard Jimmy as "sensible", I'd be a bit concerned about whether he was the best guy to be a captain?

I knew what you meant Adey. It's just that your post gave me the opportunity to mention one of the 'sillies' which occur during games which have me scratching my head!
My view of a captain is really pretty basic and it has to be someone the players respect; whether he is one who intellectualises everything the nth degree or is the type who jumps up and shouts "up and at 'em". Both types have their place, given differing circumstances. Our ref who didn't think Jimmy was 'sensible' was looking for someone to calm some situation down, which I'd have to agree probably wasn't jimmy's strong point( ), but maybe that's where the 'leadership' players, the senior guys have a role to play.
Maybe a rabble rouser and a diplomat; one as skipper and the other as vice is the way to go?

I'd take two players of that ability with or without their being captain material...........
