| Quote ="Block5Bull"I think part of the problem is that you can turn up to watch a very different game if one referee rather than another is in the middle.
My gripe is not that any given referee is inconsistent within their own performance, rather that there seems to be significant difference in interpretation of the rules from one ref to the next, particularly around the ruck, as was shown at MM. As such I would genuinely rather watch Silverwood at the moment than Childs (as an example rather than supporting the comments on this thread) as the former allows a freer flowing game.
Beyond that, refs will always make good and bad decisions and have good games and bad games, just as players will, and that has not and will not change.'"
Pretty much agree with that. But it doesn't bother me, although I would much rather see a liberal interpretation of the rules to let it flow. 30 years ago it must have been easy patrolling 12 fat blokes trawling it up in the mud incessantly, followed by an occasional foray to the wings. I remember being at HKR for the Aussies first 84 tour game. They kicked the ball back down field almost from the kick off - the looks of amazement & puzzlement on our faces must have been a picture. I think most of the HKR players didn't have a clue what to do.

That whole Huddersfield 25-24 Bradford game was strange as you had Ganson sending two of the Giants players into the bin early on for us take a 18-6 lead before just about every 50/50 call went against us in the last 50 minutes, including the famous "I've stopped the clock with six seconds left" hooter incident.

He's been appointed as referee for our game at Huddersfield.

I find that a bit strange to be honest. Back in the seventies it was common to see duels between the fullbacks kicking the ball to each other to see who dropped it first. We used to have a fullback called Terry Price around that time (not the best FB in a positional or tackling sense but he could kick a ball from Odsal to Dewsbury) so he was rarely bested in the kicking department.
His kicking was so strong he was personally responsible for change in the rules. Back in those days if the attacking team kicked the ball dead, play was re-started by the defending team dropping out from the 25 yd line (as it then was), which basically meant the team kicking the ball dead still got it back. When they first started with limited tackles (it was four originally) Price could easily kick the ball dead from inside his own 25, so Northern generally got the ball back.
So giving the ball some air was far from a new tactic in the eighties.

I bow to your extreme age & knowledge Certainly when I started watching in the late 70s & in to the early 80s kicking was very much a last tackle option, not that it was absolutley necessary as it was a scrum (with head & feed to the opposition?) if you were caught on the sixth in possession rather than the hand over (which was introduced mid-80s?).

The players have got to commit the offences in order for him to penalise them though mick. As long as he's even handed and penalises both teams the same for the same offenses then I dont really care if he's a bit pedantic, although it does disrupt the flow of the game. For this game though that may actually play in our favour a bit imo.

It will be interesting.. let's leave it at that for now!!

| What is Agar actually complaining about though? Interesting that the Cas coach did not complain as well.
If the ref is giving too many penalties, do the players and coach not have to look at themselves to sort out why?
Yes, constant penalties frustrates everyone, but if they didn't commit the offence, then no penalty!
