I'm sure I am not alone in remembering just turning up for games with no idea, & no care, who the referee was. This obsession is pathetic.

While I agree it maybe classed as an obession but the current crop are that poor it's no fault in the supporters all waiting on a Tuesday for the weekends referee allocations to be put up on the RFL website.

The current crop are as good as we have ever had. Most in the past wouldn't last 10 minutes before needing oxygen.

At least that gave them an excuse for not seeing things on the pitch. What do they blame now?

They have to make probably hundreds of mental decisions every set of 6. I can think of no other sport the same, possibly being a racing driver where you need total concentration for the duration of the race. I would love to see the harshest critics give it a go, I would pi ss myself.

I don't blame any ref for making the odd mistake, as you say there is a hell of a lot for them to keep an eye on. My problem with Child is that he has absolutely no flexibility when it comes to the rules of the game. Put this down to experience or whatever you want, but there needs to be some consideration for the game's overall momentum when refereeing, and he appears to have none.

In some instances during the match he reffed at MM, he was shouting 'move' to players making a tackle quite literally as soon as the player with the ball hit the floor. Other referees would shout the tackle count, have a brief pause, and then tell the players to move. Telling them to move as soon as they hit the ground is ridiculous, and of course in the instances when Child did this, he ended up penalising the tackling side.

I am all for flexibility. But one person's flexibility is another's bias/cheating. One of last weekend's games, can't rememeber which ATM, showed incredible tolerance from the ref which I appreciated. But even that is nothing compared to what players got away with in the good old days. Which included belting someone on the understanding you didn't complain when you got it back later.

Exactly I thought the flexibility went too far on Saturday and it played into Huddersfields game to start with but as they were eventually penalised more, Castleford rose to prominence - IMO.

If anyone gets the chance to see reruns of Northern games in the Big League, will realise that poor as this lot are they are nowhere near as bad as the old refs! I also got the feeling that a lot of the big decisions when playing the Pies always seem to go the way of the Pies!
The problem is still consistency of decisions and the only ref who has been consistent is Alibere which has got him the WCC slot! The other problem is the VR and their decision making are getting too questionable considering the technology and despite Cummings objections they should refer some back to the Ref as per NRL!

I think part of the problem is that you can turn up to watch a very different game if one referee rather than another is in the middle.

My gripe is not that any given referee is inconsistent within their own performance, rather that there seems to be significant difference in interpretation of the rules from one ref to the next, particularly around the ruck, as was shown at MM. As such I would genuinely rather watch Silverwood at the moment than Childs (as an example rather than supporting the comments on this thread) as the former allows a freer flowing game.

Beyond that, refs will always make good and bad decisions and have good games and bad games, just as players will, and that has not and will not change.

50K a year you could laugh at me all you like and I'd even wear those stupid outfits that ref wear.
