Saints have announced their squad for the second extraordinary clash of the season.
There are four changes to last weeks squad; Francis Meli, James Roby, Joe Greenwood and loanee Gareth O'Brien are all called into the 19.
Dropping out this week are Anthony Laffranchi, Carl Forster, Nathan Ashe and Stuart Howarth.
Lance Hohaia is named but is doubtful due to a dead leg sustained against Warrington.

We need one of Hohaia or Howarth on the bench to interchange with Robes as no way will he be able to play the full 80, and nor should he. That would be terrible management if they did make him play 80 mins.
I so hope that Brown doesn't mess with the Makinson/Percival/Manu possibilities down the left hand side. That's just too good a threesome to fool around with surely? If Meli has to return this week then he should replace Gardner, who is not up to much generally, one try aside, but especially in defence. Not that Meli is necessarily great in defence either but last week Gardner was woeful.

Roby can play the 80 if he needs to, he's 100% fit and probably could have played against Leeds two weeks ago so fitness isn't an issue for him. People often say about getting up to 'match fitness' but he is such a machine that his general fitness is often higher than other players match fitness so he should just be able to slot back in.
I agree about the left hand side combo, I'd like to see Makinson and Percival continue together but I'm not sure I'd start Manu. He's a bit of a liability in the first 20 minutes and when his moves don't come off it really puts us on the back foot early. |

Agreed; if HiHo was injured last week as reported, but has clearly proved his fitness, then fair enough for his bench inclusion. personally I would prefer Howarth over him.
For all those who said the problem with HiHo was that we never played him in the right position i.e. FB; well he has now played in at least 4 postions now (FB, 6, 7 & 9) and still looks poor in all those postions. Did he also play centre in one game?
Regardless, its time for his fans to stop flogging the dead horse that is Lance.
Also glad to see that NB has realised Ashe is not the answer to the HB problems. |

I agree that we should interchange Robes with Lance on Monday, it would be a huge gamble not to in my view. That apart the rest of the 17 picks itself, and I too would like to see Walmsley start with TP and Manu introduced 20 or so minutes in.

Don't get me wrong, I completely agree he should be rotated as it's his first game back, it would be daft not to. All I was saying is that Roby is one of those players were if this was a big knockout game he could probably come in and play the 80 without issue. |

I understand the arguement for combinations, but Gardners wing was porus last week. Makinson will balance out the defensive line on that side. Wellens will organise the defensive line.
I agree Manu is a bit of a liability in the opening 10 minutes, he tries too much to early.
But we also need a big pack out there to muscle up against Huddersfield, so a prop at 13 it has to be.
Gosh it's nice to see a halfback in the team.
And I would spell Roby first match back, no pots are won in this game.

He is one of those players, but there can be a massive difference between being fit and being match fit. Having watched the Giants under Brown for nearly four years I'd expect Roby to come off the bench for you guys after about 20-25 mins.
Either way he will bring back your go forward and makes you a much more dangerous team. |

I'd start Manu. Hopefully with having GOB in the side, we might start using him proper and not as a battle ram. Manu is lethal if given good ball. Manu and Sia are two strong and very good backrows. |

Your biggest problem will be Wellens who will have to keep running the ball from his own goal line which most posts on here say is the bit of his game that's gone. Brough will keep kicking you back having watched us all season if I was NB I'd put a quick lad at full back who can pick turn and run quickly otherwise it will be a long hard evening for Wello and it's hard to attack when every set starts 10/15 yards from your posts !! Interesting see what your thoughts are ??

Lomax is our best at fullback. Lance does not seam to be as good in defense or attack as makinson at fullback. But wellens is the better organizer of the defensive line. So given what is available and that wellens is nailed on to plAy if fit. Then he has to be fullback. His wingers will just have to up their game and do the majority of ball returns. |

I agree with this. I think the key to counteracting Brough's kicking game is actually our forwards fronting up and preventing him from kicking from behind a dominant pack. |

I agree but it will not be easy as our pack are at full throttle at the moment hence Broughy and Robbo getting a lot of time and from good field position.
I'm looking forward to the game I think it will be close but can see us winning it from 50 mins onwards. Due to a good kicking game and heavy pack but the great thing about playing Saints is you can never ever be quite sure !!!! |

Sure - I think that's what we've got to do, but I'm not expecting us to do it. As you say, your pack has been strong all year and ours has been poor. There's always the possibility that Roby's return might get us moving forward again. It will certainly tighten up our defence in the middle. I'm looking forward to it, but I'm not especially confident. |

A good performance and no injuries will be a good step forward on Monday. Sure enough we need a win but IMO if we play well, give Roby, wello and Meli a good run will put us in good shape for the month. I think saints next 4 games after hudds are must win games. |

A good defensive display will keep us in the game. We've had to strike from deeper recently so that should help. But a close game us more important than the result

I agree, it's getting to the point where we actually need to win to prevent us from slipping further and further down the table. Being valiant in defeat won't get us in the play offs. |
