Isn't he just. Sometimes he must despair of the team around him!

| Good point about Foster and Lomax, although by the time Potter withdrew Foster a lot of the damage had been done, and Salford's confidence grew from it.
Personally I think it was a little disrespectful from Potter to play both Foster and Lomax together, even if it was against a supposed weaker team.
Clearly Foster isn't ready for a centre birth, he was trodden over numerous times by an average centre.
Still he'll learn from it, he's only a young guy.

| Foster is too small to play anywhere bar the wing. Lomax hasn't a chance in hell of making it in SL, he has the worst hands I've ever seen in a player, he's a one man knockonathon. You wince everytime the ball goes near him and cover your eyes completely whenever he gets tackled. He also can't tackle, his attempt on Henry for the second try was Radlinski-esque.
But it's Wello that needs to go more urgently for me. He has been a truly great player for us, but is letting himself down massively. He is too slow to play fullback in SL and is always arriving when it's just too late. His ability to be in the right place almost magically has left him and he looks completely out of place.

| To be fair to Wellens, Gardner trying to get in his way all the time didn't help.

Now you're being daft. He had to contend with Gardner playing total garbage and getting in his way, and two youngsters on the other side who couldn't defend for toffee. What's the man supposed to do?

Foster has been playing on the wing the only two occasions he has been with the first team and then he has a week off and is expected to adjust to centre play at this level. Lomax has been out for 10 weeks and Potter puts him in for the whole match on his return. Neither Foster nor Lomax should be held responsible for their performances tonight beyond the fact that like many of the [isenior[/i players, they weren't too hot with ball in hand. Potter, however, should look again at his squad choices, his tactics and his defensive structure.
Methinks Salford have become our hoodoo team.

Well said I agree, also would like to say, although Ive stated it in another thread I also never wanted potter her from the start. I watched the game on sky as to go to salford from the south of the country was a bit to far, I noticed that during half time in the dressing room it was not even potter giving the team talk, well not what I saw anyway, so where the hell was he, he just sits there like a cardboard cut neither use nor bl**dy ornement.
I watched a good game on thursday with two dam good coaches, Millward and Cullen, and Cullen was scathing of his teams performance, and would no doubt of heard about it, but we have this immitation coach who seemingly sta nds for rocks breaking over his head, and for me the sooner he goes the better, I would love to see one of the above coaches at St Helens, ie one for a second stint and the other first time, at least they show some emmotion, and can be seen trying to get things done and change tactics but sorry our guy is totally Bl**dy clueless, sod off.

No, no, no. Not Cullen. He's a nice earnest guy but he is clueless. At dire he had his "lane" marking system where all the players were on imaginery tram lines going up and down the pitch. Playesrs has to keep inside their own "tram lines" even if your own player to your left or right had been beaten - you just had to let the opponent go past!
Also, there is something supsect about his training techniques. How come dire under PC and widnes under PC both suffer from half thjeir squad being injured for most of the season. Widnes had 8 academy players against the goons the other week because of injuries. You can only blame bad luck for so long.

We've had a similar problem last season and this. Are you saying there is something suspect about Potter's training techniques?

You believe wello has to cover every blade of grass on the pitch, wrong he has to be helped out by his back line of centres and wingers.
Grow up and be gratefull for the players we have and what we have acheived in superleague muppet.

Oh yeah, I forgot how great a coach Cullen was. Remind me how he went last time he coached in Super League? Any coach can shout at his players and "show some emotion", I doubt most of them could get to 3rd in the table with an injury-hit squad.

| Im not saying we want or should have cullen, but at least he shows passion or something but potter at best is a cardboard cut out, and where was he when the cameras went to the dressing room at half time it was not he that was talking.
Maybe Ive got it all wrong its just for me a personal thing I never wanted him here in the first place so maybe Ive got a downer on him.

The cameras weren't trained on the changing rooms for the whole of half time - we have no idea what was and wasn't said and by whom.

I am grateful for the success we've had and for Wello's contribution throughout his career. However his contract is up I believe (Correct me if I'm wrong) and I can't honestly see any reason to keep him other than sentimentality. He is too slow and his ability to 'be there' has deserted him. Look at Broughton's try, would any other fullback in SL have looked so foolish? They would have been there quicker and made a proper attempt to tackle him. I seem to be the only person who sees any wrong in him. He let the ball go out on the full from the kick off, missed a few key tackles, knocked on about 2 or 3 times for tries from kicks and just had an absolute mare throughout.
Gardner, rightly, has been panned on here for his errors, but all of those were situations where the fullback should be taking charge of things and dealing with them. I would have Leon at fullback next week, Wello at centre if Flannery isn't back.

Sigh.
I know people have enjoyed quoting Sculthorpe allegedly having a go at Potter as some sort of justification that he's a clueless coach. The thing is, people tend not to quote a couple of Scully's more pertinent comments:
Quote ="Paul Sculthorpe"I've talked to players who have played under him and they speak very highly of his coaching. I spoke to Stacey Jones when Potter joined Saints as Stacey had worked with him at Catalans and he told me he was one of the best coaches he'd ever played under. Stacey has played with some of the very best so Potter obviously knows his stuff.'"
Quote ="Paul Sculthorpe"He has had to bring in young kids who, when they started, were not up to it. At the time, they were not Super League standard and were too inexperienced to be playing for Saints. If Potter is improving these current players, then he has to take credit for that even if we don't win anything this year. I think the fans understand that but they don't like saying it.'"
Potter should not be judged on one game at home to Hull, nor one game away at Salford missing 7 or so players where he was let down badly by some of his internationals. He should be judged at the end of this contract (when he could theoretically have won the double) and even in the seasons to come if the young players he has spent two years coaching through a period of transition for the side develop into the players we all hope they will.
I still firmly believe he is doing well in some very testing circumstances this season and that we are well placed to challenge on all fronts.
