Hi to all you Saints fans from a Halifax fan.
Sorry to interrupt your pre Grand Final thoughts but we are having our past players dinner tomorrow evening (Halifax RLFC) and we have none other than the legendary Tommy Martyn as our guest speaker.

I just thought it would be nice if some of you Saints fans re-lived some of your fondest memories of a great player and we could give them a mention at the dinner.

Thanks in advance - i'm sure there's lots of funny stories as he's a big character and was a fantastic player.

Can you ask him if hes going to the grand final and if so can he bring his boots???

You're in for a treat, great speaker and great guy to boot - I arranged for him to do the Ormskirk RU dinner last may and everyone loved him (despite it being a rugby union club dinner, even those who weren't too familiar with him and all the old farts thought he was great).

Not sure he'd want reminding about this but can you ask him about collecting an Alfie Langer grubber in his own in-goal at Wilderspool then Alfie following it up and taking the ball back off him one-on-one and scoring.
One of the most bizarre tries I ever saw at the old place.
Needless to say Saints still went on to win

As a Leeds fan I’d have to say that Tommy was my favourite saints player. He and Paul Sculphorpe represented all that was class around that era. I’ll remember him for his kicking game mainly. Its no surprise saints fans of today are asking him to bring his boots along on Saturday

We had a great night with Tommy and he entertained us with some great stories about his career. A really nice genuine bloke and everybody enjoyed listenng to him. Thanks for all your comments.

It may have been referred to indirectly above - but I think that try against Wigan was the third of his hat trick that day.

But Tommy was not infallible. He made a "Big Mistake" against Leeds one game at Knowsley Rd.

Leeds were attacking and Saints did not have time to organise their defence.

Tommy was on the bench at the time, I think. And he made an "understandable mistake". He kicked the ball onto the pitch, but there was already one one the pitch so the ref. had to hold up play while the situation was sorted out.

Strangely enough that gave Saints time to organise their defence and they held out against the Leeds attack.

The lesson of course is that it is more important that people realise to have good alert players on the bench.
