| Now that st helens reign of terror is over, how is this going to affect their budgets. The were making steady progress to curb their huge losses each year but without reaching the final and quite possibly the grand final they are a champion team with only a harlequins expenditure to play with.
Hopefully the chairman will make cutbacks so that you guys live within your means but this may take time. Just beware of the situation that Bradford have found themselves in, hopefully your shrewd management will manage your decline better than the Bradford lot did there

Wigan seemed to have coped with it over the past decade or so
In all serious though, there are two ways of looking at it, the merchandising and prize money made versus the costs of taking the squad and staff for the weekend to London, including expenses and after match parties meals etc....
I think there is obviously a profit to be made, but perhaps not as much most people would expect.
I don't think prize money has increased in line with the revenue the final makes over the past 10 years either.

| In this Chairmans era our focus has firmly been on the CC final because it is the most lucrative.
Cayless was the last big Money signing and Puletua the only signing in 2 years.
Although the club has improved the contracts of many of the squad I fully expected 1 or 2 more additions to soliola.
Flip side is though we should be in for a bumper year our last at the old stadium

Puma also takes a slice of the cake on those shirts. However, Saints only have one year left of that agreement, though and then can more easily control the stock flow, which would be helpful on a relatively small scale. I think it's the stadium that really kills us financially. It's one big black hole.

I heard it cost saints around 300k a year to keep GPW Stadium going, getting the OK from planning then getting builders does take a while, but we will have our own ground for 2011.
This will allow the club to make money not only from the Rugby but from other events that we cant have currently at GPW.

| We spend £300k a year on weed killer and cement. New stadium = financial glory. Gillette will give us gazillions instead of hundreds, blue chip companies who have wanted in for a long time will finaly come on in, we can get the odd semi or international game at teh new gaff, we can use low energy bulbs instead of parafin heaters for the main game lights, we cna hire out funciton rooms that peopel actualy want to use without the fear of smelling of damp on their clothes. We can go years without winning a bean, but we still be proper bo in the finances. A nice steady 11k yearly figure and the same amoutn of shirt sales to.

I hope you do make money from the new ground, but I'm not convinced with the 2011 opening date you confirm?
But once you have the new ground the proof is going to be in the Pudding with attendances will St Helens at last compete with Wigan and Leeds as "The Big Ones" (hope I don't upset P Sephton, what a storm in a tea cup, about using the term which attracted 20,000, do some people have nothing better to do than moan? more so after the recent Saints v Wigan attendance - Marketing does work!)

Unfortunately, we have not made a profit for many a year and in recent years the loss has grown not shrunk.
The latest 2008 accounts show a loss of £449,000 up from £400,000 in 2007. The accounts are held together by a property revaluation of £7M to an £8M value for the ground in 2007; this is the same amount that they have agreed to sell it for but such sale cannot be completed until after the club has actually moved to the new stadium.
Total loans to the club are now over £4.2M however, most relate to directors or shareholders loans and they have agreed not to take these loans out of the company.
I'm just telling it as it is and I hope the directors do try to improve the financial performanace as this shows how 100% important it is for the new stadium to come about as that seems the only hope of transforming the trading position.

That is of no consuquence to the OP.
The point of this thread is "how will not getting to Wembley effect our budgets??"
Our yearly accounts have been all over the place in the past few years, sometimes we can win both finals and post a loss as big as when we haven't made a final.
My point is simply that getting to the final is not always as financially positive as some people might think.
If Saints directors and senior management RELY on getting to both finals then they are crazy, as you must budget based on not making the finals.

The Chairman and the CEO often comment on how they don't budget for reaching finals/winning trophy's - The majority of our finances/budgets are structured around known events such as sponsorship deals, season ticket sales and corporate sales........

| Wigan made a profit on the Leeds game our CEO confirmed it at the Fans Forum. Saints made a profit on visits to Wembley, I was told by a director, though they may have made a loss on the financial year.
Although Saints owe £4.2m to directors how is this affected by the share issue a couple of weeks back when they turned debt into shares? Wouldn't this have the effect of reducing the company debts?
The value of KR now stands at £8m, isn't that a bit optimistic given the state of the economy? Although the 2008 figures could have been drawn up prior to the downturn in the economy.
All clubs have to be careful in these economic times and lets hope all survive and in the end all thrive.

It all depends what kind of decline we are discussing. Your thesis seems to be that a likely drop off in on-field success and winning trophies is the same as a financial decline.
Another scenario is that we could not win anything for a few years, but an economic upturn, lucrative sponsorship and new kick-ass stadium facilities will generate loads of money for the club.

The problem with fixed price contracts comes when the economy struggles - If the firm involved cant afford to go ahead at the fixed price what can you do? two options - 1. try to enforce the contract and company will just go into receivership. 2. Wait and ride out the economic storm.....either way, it is a potential issue in the medium/short term.
