| Quote ="The Chair Maker"Gleeson is a very good player, and on paper will be an excellent signing for Wigan.
However if he comes with negative baggage, which his sale now from both Saints and Warrington suggests is true; then the cost to team morale at Wigan in the long term might be greater.
If Goulding is exchanged for Gleeson, then it will be interesting to see how Gouldings game progresses at wire. He has a lot of potential, but it doesnt appear to have developed much at Wigan. Perhaps Tony Smith can bring the best out of him.
The way i see this deal is Wire offloading a (possible) trouble maker, and taking a bit of a gamble on a good youngster, and a player whose confidence at Wigan is shot.'"
I think Gleeson will realise it's his last chance and knuckle down. He obviously had no interest from the NRL as he kept banging on about moving there but hasn't made the move. Wigan have probably overspent on a big name again. By the end of next season he'll be nearly 31 Why not buy the next Martin Gleeson instead? It's not like they're just in need of one strike player to win Super League, they need probably another 6-8 players before they'll do that.
Warrington are mad if they accepted any player exchanges. Mathers is terrible although he'll probably replace Reardon as they're rumoured to be dispensing with him soon too. Goulding isn't a replacement for Gleeson either. He's a solid Super League level player, but not good enough for a team supposidly challenging for honours. The fact that a team as average as Wigan wanted him out says it all.
But Wire needed to act, Gleeson was obviously not pulling his weight there and would have walked for nothing at the end of the season no doubt. I just hope they spent the past week begging for money instead of useless players in exchange.

On paper Phil Bailey, Richie Mathers and Amos Roberts were excellent signings too.

He was class at saints, and now has experience to boot. He is also a wiganer which is important in my book, will hopefully play for the shirt. Yes he likes a drink, which is an issue, but if this can be controlled he will be a great signing for wigan. A few people on here forget the uproar when we sold him.

no problem.
You use different stats to judge different positions. If I were to judge a prop I would look at meters made, tackles, meters per carry and so on.
For a winger I would look at trys scored. End of. Thats their job, to score trys. HF scored lots of trys and is therefore a good winger. Had your statement been true about him costing shed loads of trys then that would make him less good. However your statement as you have said yourself is a gross over-exaggeration.

Neither would I.
I'm a big fan of Gleeson, I think he's one of the best on his day, but his attitude and professionalism is very questionable at times. Two clubs have basically shipped him out of the door, which suggests he isn't a good influence on the team.

and that only appeared following that game against KR in the cup in 06 prior to that he'd been fine.

In one. I think it would be highly hypocritical if Saints fans were slating an aged player for being old.
Lee Gilmour - 31
Matt Gidley - 31
Willie Talau - 33
Martin Gleeson - 28.
I'd still have him back at Saints and it would have to be a great player to get the place ahead of him (ie Jamie Lyon). Gleeson works hard, gains great metres, has had a raft of successful wing-men outside of him and is involved in a lot of tackles.
The argument about his attitude cant be used as he was one of many at Saints at the time who committed similar offenses and Warrington have never been famed for their discipline. I also don't think they're fobbing him off, Mathers and Goulding could either work well for them or make them money through loan spells. Add that fact they wanted some cash before he went for free.

| A bit of a risk for Wigan. Its well documented his off the field problems and he will command a huge salary, and a long term contract to boot.
Another Fielden esq saga will see the goons lumbered with another expensive flop whilst out youngsters are bloodied and thrive!

in gleeson and carmont weve got two centres who are up there with the best in super league.

| Awful deal for Warrington, losing Gleeson and getting Mathers. You'd think they'd have wanted someone half decent in return.
