| Despite my natural antipathy towards all things Pie I consider Faz to be the outstanding British forward of his generation.
His commitment and drive to win were unquestioned and he had a tremendous workrate.
If I was picking a British team of players I have seen in my 34 years of serious RL watching he would be in it.
Still not as good a player as John Woods though.......

| For me Farrell only lived up to the hype when he moved to prop forward for the goons. He carried that team for a couple of years, fooked his body up in the process.
Before that he was a good player but nowhere near as "great" as some made out.

I agree, he was a great prop, but not creative enough for a great loose

| Powerful adjectives are all too readily used these days. Lets put it into context. Farrell was a Wigan great. He led the team exceptionally and they miss the injection of pure will to win (as well as obvious talent) that he had in the derbies we played against them. He was IMO a better leader than Scully.
Scully however enjoyed a better record in terms of performances against Australia.
Even during the nadir of 2003 when we were walloped by anout 60 points, he was the only player to emerge with any credit.
He was the one player the Australian press always gave respect to. Farrell never seemed to enjoy the same respect. I think the golden boot explained some of this. It was Martyn Sadler and co's way of recognising a great club player, but as so often is the case, unfortunately one who was not the same player at international level and the Australians realised this.
That is not to say Farrell was poor, in seriousness. He was obviously more able than most of the current set of forwards, but like Radlinski, nowhere near the type of player Wigan fans in la la land would have you believe.

| Farrell was an awesome player for Wigan, were ever he played.
He never translated his form to GB though. He either got in the way and tried to be too much of a ball player, or operated in the forwards and didn't make much impact (in comparison to his play at club level).
If you compare that to somebody like Peacock, who I think plays even better when he pulls on a GB shirt.

| Both players (Along with Peacock) are head and shoulders above almost everything we have at International level Currently.
Unfortunately the Standards in SL mean are so low that we have to watch the current crop parading around such as JJB/Wilkin/Sinfield/Westwood/Langley/Purdham etc at international level and yet were told that standards are rising year on year!
As both players played the majority of their careers at 2nd row/Loose I would be inclined to judge them on those positions.
Me personally I would have both in the team but if I had to pick one I would (Obviosuly/Biased whatever you what to Think) pick Farrell.
Teams need different types of players to make a Great Team, IMHO in Sculthorpe & Farrell you had the perfect compliment.
Both got great Hands, good kicking games, ability to make a break, run the ball in tough when it was needed.
Farrell Better defensively, Sculthorpe better attacking player.
2001 1st Test v Aus (I think 2001) sums it up for me.
Sculthorpe scores 2 x tries (And a Drop I think) and caused Aussies all kind of probs playing at 6
Farrell kicked 3 or 4 goals made about 40+ tackles and came off covered in Mud & sweat.
That was a perfect combination and one I can't see being repeated at 6 & 13 for many years ahead!

Just about right for me!
Why can't people just agree to disagree???
If someone said to me that out of 10 Scully was a 10 & Farrell was a 9 I would'nt agree totally and I would ahve it the other way round but what is undeniable is they were both "Greats"!
When Fans of either side say they are overrated/didnt perform at International level/ couln't do this couldn't do that it is alarmingly clear that their prejudice and hatred of the other is making them spout complete drivel!
Although I am the 1st to accept I don't like St Helens you can't argue with facts and IMHO the generation of players we had 4/5/6 years ago were far better than what we have now

| Farrell is one of the greats. No bitter Saints-Wigan rivalry here. There was plenty of times I'd come away from a Saints-Wigan game, with a sick beaten feeling in my stomach thanks to him. The Murrayfield final sticks in my mind. We were favourites, but thanks to his leadership (And Lams) & his conversions they won the game despite the teams scoring 3 trys a piece.
I'm baffled as to why Union wanted him though. I'm sure they were expecting the 'Pele' of rugby. What they got was a battered, injury ridden 'end of his career' player with nothing much to offer apart from his leadership, powerful hard running & his ability to guide his team around the pitch. He wasn't able to do the latter because he was new to the game.

| Absolutely stole his money for the impact he made in RU. Then again, good on him, more fool them for ever signing him.
Also if he'd stayed in League he would have only lasted maybe two more years at prop, he was past his best and knew his time was ending which is why he left for the coin. $$$$$$$ Kerching!! How much money has he made in the last 4-5 years for very little. I can only imagine.

I agree with most of your points there. However, loathe as i am to get involved in any debate to try to compare two players, personally i'd rate them both at the same level based on their respective careers, the impact they both had on the game during their time in the top flight and their individual merits - NOT on how they compare to each other in some kind of petty flop contest.

Don't disagree and I can understand that Most Saints fans will pick Scully & Vice Versa.
I think I did try to rate them on their own individual merits by mentioning that both had slightly different attributes that brought different qualities to the teams they played in.
That's why I think together they worked well, one could roll his sleeves up a touch more whilst the other could add the cherry on the cake a bit better so to speak.
Currently at Wigan given the e were in at the moment I would probably pick Faz if I could have one back now.
If Wigan were at the Top of the League & looking to a player for a bit of magic to win us a big one then I may go for Scully.

| All wigan hating tendancies aside, I much preferred playing the pies with Farrell out of the team. Especially when he was propping for them.
That to me says he was a very influential player.
