Agree with most of what has been said. Simmons would be crazy to drop Gaskell after his performance 2 weeks ago. As a Wigan fan i'd rather you played Pryce & Lomax in the halves. Should be a classic game, Wigan wont play as badly as they did last time they met. May the best team win.

I agree. You have to cover a certain amount of bases with your half back partnership, from danger with ball in hand to creative distribution to the all important long kicking game.
Because of this, imo, Gaskell has managed to play his way into essentially being my first choice half back, since he is the only one who has a reliable and effective long kicking game.
I suspect Wheeler may have more variety in his game than I give him credit for, but since we've seen so little of him, I can't be sure.

On a related note, last night I watched part of the Wakey home game. Wheeler had moved to stand off from centre when Gaskell had been injured and played a blinder. The opposition wasn't the best, but that wasn't his fault.

Wheeler is the most naturally gifted RL player in our squad IMO.

I'm not sure if "the most" is correct as we have some pretty special players, but when questioned by Rogues as to why we all rate Wheeler so highly I replied -

Some players are good because their fast, big, agile, skillful, but the best way to describe Wheeler is he's just good at rugby. He get's put in situations that other players fluff and he executes things perfectly. He make rugby league look easy.

Not many people can say that.

His injury woes make me ache to the very core.

Good as Wheeler is, I don't think he'll be playing on Saturday. Agree with 1984saints. Same team as last week with Pryce on the bench.

Well his last two games were what - Wigan away and Quins away. Both of those for starters.

You can yack all you want, but at this point last year you had Lomax in the same bin as you have Wheeler in now. In fact you had eastmond in aswell until he decided to leave and you then relised you could spread the doom and gloom by saying how much we'd miss him.

I'd happily give Wheeler another chance if he proved his resilience. But this is chance 9,876 and probably his last if he wants to get a new deal. Another year of biscuititis and he'll be offski.

I'll not defend his injuries, I've never known a guy struggle so much to stay fit. If that's the reason we have to release him then fair doos, but if it does happen it'll be to the dissapointment of all but one supporter on here and will not be because of his lack of rugby ability.

He was fabulous on both occasions. And he played the whole game on both occasions.

IMO wheeler looks to have great potential and looks a very good young player but his injury situation is very worrying.

How many chances do we give him?

The fact that you've had to use an U20's game to support your argument says a lot, even though I was being facetious with that remark. I'm sure he finished lots of U18s games too, but that's no use to us now.



I wasn't being facetious with my first comment though, I've never seen him play poorly for the first team.

I'll take that as a complement.

Depends on his contract, if he's not on mega bucks then I'm happy to wait for him to try and get over his injuries.

He might grow out of them , then again he might not. I'd love to see him do well for Saints but I wouldn't be surprised to see him end up on the scrap heap at Leigh or somewhere
