| I'll be slightly surprised if he's strung more than 2 consecutive appearances together for us in the 1st team without getting injured in his entire career.
He looks to have ability, has more of a rugby brain than many others with far more experience, but unfortunately if he can't stay fit he's a waste of cap space. I was always willing to give him another chance, but these are starting to run out. I'm with some of the others, this is his last year for me unless his body starts to prove to be up to the rigours of playing SL. Let's hope it does for his sake.

| That's what I thought when I saw him go off injured. Not good for his future health.
Hope he gets back soon. Can't think of a player that has had worse luck?

Gareth Hock was sadly born without a brain.

I'd be tempted to put Gardner in the second row, he's got a lot more go-forward than our forwards.

| Back to Wheeler, I do feel sorry for him, he's obviously on the edge of living the dream for his home town club and probably gets wind of these forums. And whilst it is amusing from a distance with the biscuit jokes, it must hurt the lad and it must come back to him every time he is injured.
Sitting in that changing room is a lonely place and all you can do it think of what has happened and what people have said in the past about you.
I've never had a problem with the lad and whilst I like Gaskell, I did not think Wheeler put a foot wrong last week and deserved his selection this week. If he was not going to make it I would rather it be on merit and someone forcing him out of the team. When it comes down to injury, questions will always be asked, whether we go the best out of him.
No doubt if we do offload him, he will come good and this will be another hindsight recruitment and retention decision to bash the club with. I hope it's not too long term and he gets the chance to put 10 games together. But if not yes he may be at the end.
Although as a side issue, you have to have a certain number of locally produced lads in your squad, (it's in the rules) most will never get regular 1st team action anyway. So having one with talent who gets occasional game is worth keeping over one with little talent and will not even get a game against Swinton in the CC.
So if his wages are not massive, I'd have no problem retaining him rather than just promoting an acadamy player who will never play, just to make up the numbers in the squad.

He played in the second row for half of one game in 2011, when we'd lost loads of players to injury, and he looked ok there.

Wigan made him an offer I think it was 2010 (it was Maguires first year) so Saints gave him a decent salary too keep him. I guess it'll depend what offers are on the table when his contract expires.

That did cross my mind, about the same length of time 4 years wasn,t it. We don,t seem to have much luck at 6 around the superleague years, Hammond, Martyn, Pryce and Wheeler have had long periods of injuries.

Signed a two year extension last March after managing 4 games together.
Given his track record think he needed to have proved his resilience before giving him his second or third first team contract extension. Yet another poor recruitment decision.
So he is sorted for another two years regardless.
Is there a record for a player to reach a testimonial having played less than 100 games?

You can add Scully to that list too. When he moved from loose forward to halfback is when his injury woes began.
Speaking of Scully, what bad luck with his injury, the guy is only in his 30's, he could have been playing up until last year at least. May not have been at his pomp but gees he would have made a difference to Saints over the last 5 years.

| I was gutted for him the other night. Whilst a few of you are sat there denouncing him as injury prone, imagine how the lad himself must feel. He has so much talent, but every time he gets the opportunity to show it, he finds himself off the field with injuries.
As I said, I am genuinely gutted for him.

| I think the most likely scnario will be seeing his contract out and not being offered another one ( unless he can prove his fitness ). Seeing him in the changing room was such a sad sight and i hope he can come back from this.
To make a bit of a comparason Tommy Martyn played 90 games in 6 years,i wonder what the fickle supporters of today would of said about that now a days.

If you take an average of 30 games a year, for argument's sake. That would mean Martyn was playing every other game. Wheeler, on the other hand, is playing just one game in every three.
I'm not bagging the lad. But professional sport is a tough business, and if his body just isn't up to it, then that's a real shame for him, and for the club who won't benefit from his talent, but we're wasting cash on him at the moment.

You would have to be pretty heartless to not feel gutted for the lad.
But, unfortunately, he can't string 3 games together without picking up an injury and you have to take an objective look at this: how much longer can we continue to pay a player who has picked up so many injuries?
The lad has a contract, so I'd suggest getting him out on loan and telling him that he needs to prove his fitness in order to get back into the team. If not, then he cannot get a contract extension.

| I actually thought this was his last year.
However the point remains, the size of his contract is key here. Every year we have a 30 man squad, I think 12 have to be home grown players.
Better to have a quality, injury prone player, than just a player to make up the numbers. But if he's pulling down a big wedge then that theory does not hold.
I have nothing but good wishes for the guy but the club will have to make a decision at some point. Just hope it's the right one for him and the club.
