| I know you think that but I disagree even though I can list the following I do not expect you to agree.
If you want to sign a back you have to boot someone out.
I would not sell Foster. Proven try scorer. Safe in defence also offers a goal kicking ability we have not have for as long as I can recall.
I would not sell Meli he is a better centre than any other federation centre and is in the top 2 of non federation centres.
I would not sell shenton he has had a quite year but is no slouch and still has quality. one season does not make or break a career. it would be an expensive guy to have sat in the stands.
Lomax has had a great season and given there are no overseas spots left there is no half back federation trained who is available and better.
Lance has not even touched a ball and so why would we replace him?
So in the backs that leaves fullback and a wing spot. I reckon Wellens will have one more year and Lomax or Lance can fill that spot. Again would be expensive to have Wello sat in the stands. Can't see anyone who would sign at FB for 1 season. Any longer and we may as well offload ashe gaskell wheeleer. As for signing a winger well I cant justify that ahead of a prop any day of the week. Would rather have two props and play a under 20s on the wing.
The whole beat a man arguement just does not work for me. There are plenty of wingers who can beat a man but cant defend or score for toffee. Id go with an average paced top scorer over a one wonder try a season player who panics under the high ball, cant defend and drops balls and trys like its going out of fashion.

| We need a fullback, centre and a creative halfback.
It's no great shock that in the Wigan games (apart from home) we've been in the game and mostly for large parts of the game camped on their line but failed to break them down due to IMO no creative flair backs.
Sure enough, Wigan have a good defence but in that semi we should have put points on the board.
The forwards are doing the job of getting us up field but the backs ain't doing anything with the field position.

But in that very game we had Pryce playing who was supposed to be our most creative player. The lomax Pryce combo proved less effective than the Wheeler Lomax combo.
For me next year is the year where we either see Wheeler break through or get shipped out along with several others. If Gaskell Makinson Wheeler Ashe cant replace Wellens at FB then we'll buy in and an overseas would not surprise me.

I thought you had become sensible in recent times. Turns out not to be the case. The Potter bollox is boring and so excuse me if I don't respond to it. It's also incredibly childish.

Is this the coach that responds to the situation you outlined by giving them 4 days off, knowing ( I assume) that they have no game the following week.'"
They beat Hudds. They got four days off. They lost to Hull KR. Daniel Anderson used to give the team time off during the season. Most teams do it so far as I know.

But is pryce creative?
Pryce IMO played his best rugby when longy was his scrumhalf and longy was our main creative player. Pryce is a runner, he's at his best taking the line on.

No. But before he went on long term sick leave he was very good at bossing us around the pitch and turning a game due to him being able to think. We don't have many players who can think.

I recorded the 96 challenge cup final on espn classics and you can see just how much better our backs was compared to the makeshift lot we have at the moment.
Prescott - massive threat with ball. Pace!
Arnold - only in for Hayes but good with ball.
Gibbs - powerhouse with ball awesome defence.
Newlove - pure class
Tommy - genius
Goulding - real scrumhalf. Creative, kicking game, directs the team and a leader.
Tommy got injured and Hammond went to 6 but even then we had bobbie giving us direction and tommy and Karl doing there thing.
Compare that to our makeshift backs now!

I agree he was doing ok but that's it, just ok.
Can't recall the last time Leon had good game against a good side.

Wigan at the DW. Granted, Jamie saved the day with his marvellous catch. But without Leon on the pitch we would have lost that match. He scored a wonderful solo try from the scrum for instance.

Cant argue with that but those were the days pre image rights and also the cap was either not in place or more easy to manover around.
Arnold was not a patch on our current wingers though. We cant live in the past though you are lucky to fit one top class centre in your side in the current game. i reckon we have two top sl centres. But world class dont play in SL. Its one thing to want more than you have but then you have to fit it into the cap and with whats available.
So just with the FB to keep it simple who would you get? Obviously tomkins but he is basically not available to saints ever. Who next well an NRL full back but the best are gonna stay on better money in the NRL. So no we are looking at federation based players. Personally I cant name a better FB that is a federation based player than wellens. So saying we need a FB with pace does not mean there is one ready.
I think ashe has pace and i think lance or lomax will take the role in 2013. if ashe does not prove up to it. At that point either gaskell will be what i hope he will be or wheeler will. Or we'll go shopping and either by a half back or a fullback.

You're assuming there, of course, that we don't have even greater potential coming through in the Academy. We could see some completely different players given their debuts next season, who knows?

Oh without doubt we will bring players in from our youth squad, it's cheaper!

Yes, it was good side with options all over the pitch. On one side we had Gibbs who was pure power house and awesome in defence. On the other side we had the pure class of newlove with the pace of sully outside him.
Goulding with his direction, ball playing and top class short and long kicking game. Tommy at 6 popping up with his skillfull clever plays.
In them days we even had forwards that could attack in Apollo, KC, Karl Hammond, joint, Vila and pickavance.
