| Quote ="LovesToSpooge"Granted as a Wigan fan I don't see Foster that much. But I'll ask the question. If you tuck Foster's superb goal kicking ability off him, is he any good? Personally I've never seen him bust a tackle or go on a jinking maisey run to evade defenders. It does appear to me that he's just a one trick pony. That may be a little harsh, but I've never seen the kid create something out of nothing.
Roby on the other hand. What can I say that hasn't already been said. Just a superb player.'"
He's not just a good goal kicker but it helps that he is because it's been a long while since we had one.
He's good under the high ball, reads the game very well, good in defence and good finisher with good workrate.
However, I do agree with the fact he can't bust a tackle, step past defenders or go on jinking maisey runs but I hope as he grows and develops he will gain that. Potter said last year that foster is playing a year before they wanted him to.
I think his progress has been outstanding since that Salford game.
That catch in last min a Wigan last year, that finish at Leeds and that kick off the touchline against cas show he's got something about him.

Ill call your Jamie Foster and raise you a Frano Botica!

Fair asessment maybe, but then on last years criteria, he must be a candidate for man of steel. Certainly has at least as much to his game as Richards, except for the ability to twoer over oppostiton wingers and catcvh the high kicks to a corner, although he does seem pretty safe on the whole under these sort of kicks anyways. Unfortuantely for Foster, unlike last year, other players such as Roby are performing, so he is unlikely to follow Richards as MoS.

I've yet to see Foster score 80 yarders, Botica scored quite a few.

No, but he has transferred the ball from one hand to the other behind his back to finish in a tight corner.

Botica was a one trick pony! the best kicker i've ever and probably will ever see, but the rest of his game was garbage and he was carried by the rest of the team

| As well as goal kicking, he has safe hands under kicks, even under a lot of pressure (remeber his take at the DW last year which caused Stevo to give him MoM?). He also has a canny nack of being in the right place at the right time to cover kicks through and alike. I think he could make a good full back.

| Great kicker, safe as houses in defence and a natural finishing ability.
9 tries from 8(+3) games is a great return. This is all playing outside makeshift centres - imagine him alongside a Lyon or Gidley...
True, we've not seen him go 80 metres but we've also not seen him put into space. Not many of today's wingers can create a try from 80 metres - only Jodie Broughton springs instantly to mind and for me, Foster offers infinitely more as a player than he does.
His turn of pace for his 2nd try against Wigan suggested he can shift when he gets chance...

| Darren Bent is rubbish, all he does his score goals. I never see him running rings around 4 defenders and back heeling it into the net whilst whisking an egg.
My point is, it's a team game. If Foster is finishing a brilliant move by the team by stepping over line & putting it down I don't care. If he's slotting match winning conversions...who cares. He's invaluable to the team.

| All I'm saying is I don't see anything special about Foster, other than excellent kicking game. If you compare him with Jermaine Mcgilvray at Huddesfield, who's far less experienced than Foster. McGilvary is the far better player IMO. His kick returns and general play are far more dangerous to the opposistion than what Foster ever offers.

I'd take foster everytime over mcgilvray. Mcgilvray is just power and thats all he offers.
Foster is good under high ball, top finisher, good in defence and reads the game like he's been playing for years at super league level.

| Quote ="LovesToSpooge"I think that's a fair assessment. He strikes me as being your version of our own Goulding. Reliable in pretty much all area's of the game, but highly unlikely to make carve out a match winning opportunity on his own. The kind of player who's dependent on the team they play in to make them look good. Stick them on the wing for Wakey for example and they'd be pretty non existent IMO.'"

I think he makes a fair point too.
Foster isn't a speedster, he doesn't have a big sidestep like Lomax for example and he doesn't break tackles because he isn't particularly big either. But, he is a very reliable player, he's tough, he's become a good defender who positions himself better than he used to (gained with experience), he's a good finisher and now his confidence is up, his goal kicking is top drawer. He also shows moments of excellent skill e.g. his try at Leeds. He also doesn't miss many games like some of our other youngsters - so he's durable too. He's becoming a good first team player and whilst I don't think he'll ever be a stand out player, he's good with the outstanding ability to kick goals.

Far less experienced? A mighty 6 SL games less than Foster over 2 years?
No place in this league for solid wingers who finish well and kick goals. Unless they play for Wigan, in which case they become Man Of Steel contenders.
p.s. Mcgilvray busts more tackles and makes more clean breaks than Pat too if you go by JM's 2011 stats and PR's "Man Of Steel" winning 2010 season; I suppose you could say "his kick returns and general play are far more dangerous to the opposistion than what Richards ever offers".

| All im saying in that 27 appearances (3 as a sub) for Saints Jamie Foster has scored 16 tries and kicked 119 goals already for 302 points.
9 tries already this season How is that the sign of a weak link or bad player?
With reg to Halligan, only scored 80 odd tries over a very long career but was deadly with the boot, invaluable to any team.
