Interesting all the comments about Pilkington! is their not a history buff around as I seem to remember them wanting to get involved way back in time when I was a kid and the then board all small business man wanted to keep hold of their toy, most of them spent more time at Moss Lane when socialising. Then Pilkington became involved if I remember right in the test for under ground heating, but again if memory serves me right there was concern that it may damage the pitch if installed? I think Lord and Lady Pilkington did a lot for the Town!

No your thinking of Alf Sutton, who was a very generous guy, I approached him for the first then sponsorship of a youth team/club and within a day he was back and said yes! he offered more than we had asked for as we had only quoted for jerseys and a cheap name, he said it had to be Umbro who then supplied Saints and shorts and socks, only problem he did not want his sponsors name on! so we just had the embroidered club badge.

Can't say too much on this board but it is fairly common knowledge that the Sutton's entrusted their businesses to a bunch of sharp suited people who quickly relieved the family of much of its fortune. Remember the mercedes dealer and the truck rental business.

Thats why they retreated to their core haulage and storage busineses - just about in time - but it was very close thing. They are under excellent managment now, but the family haven't been actively involved for a long time.

I do know that Alf Sutton had a very successful business at the time he wanted to join the board.
He was knocked back by the incumbent "business men" at the time.
