Fair enough. I wasn't aware they had changed the rules. So Wigan didn't actually need a special exemption then?

| Quote ="No1 Saint"If you read between the lines he wont be sacked for not winning a trophy in his first season is stated but I think that statement is based on the assumption you WILL win something or at least come damned close i.e. make a final. Expectations at Wigan are at the same level as those at Saints and Leeds but unfortunatly for the new guy he has a team that has consistantly underachieved for a long long time now where Saints and Leeds have been delivering.
Tough job tbh'"
They've got to two semi finals this year, they haven't under achieved that much.
Nobles inability to get them anywhere near the top 2 and then left them with too much to do in the play offs has cost him his job.
If this bloke is any good, and if he's been the assistant coach at Melbourne he will be, and can deal with the step up to head coach Wigan will be pretty dangerous next year. They'll also have a number of players playing for new contracts which means there'll be far better performances from some of their more underachieving players.

Laying everything at Noble's feet publicly is ok - as long as Noble doesn't create a slanging match in the media about IL's running of the club
Admitting the coach wasn't first choice live on TV
Saying the only chance of success is to appoint from overseas (hardly something to inspire Mr. Wane in terms of his long term prospects)
Comparing Grand Final winning Leeds appointing the Tri-Nations winning coach to Wigan (whom he amdits are desperately out of shape) appointing an untried Assistant Coach and expecting him to win a trophy in the first year.
To me what should be seen as a very promising appointment is being somewhat overshadowed by his ramblings & feeding the trolls.
P.S. Before you think me another troll I do believe it is a very promosing move and it should see Wigan competitve year round which is great news for the game and a return to a proper local rivalry - though IL might be expecting a lot with a trophy 2010 if he is not giving him chance to change the squad at all.'"
I think if you look on the Wigan board i have said I.L. could have handled things better regarding this.
The big advantage of M.M. Coming is Wane going to Assistant coach he will bring the passion to the players and drive them harder in training.

Not only that but Wane will have the respect off all the younger players to as they have all worked with him previously. The Wane appointment is the best decision IL has made yet as he has done tremendous work with the younger players and deserves his chance.

| Quite incredible the depth of knowledge IL has about what characters are saying what on this (and other) forums, even down to knowing what their avatars are. Has he got no work to do?
Whoops just remembered, he has no work to do except watch Saints and Leeds.

| Love the panic this appointment is causing on Merseyside!
Saints fans seem to be more interested in talking about a resurgent Wigan than the GF...!
The thing they have feared for a decade is finally happening.
As many of their top players come to the end of their careers or leave the club, they can see that the great Wigan club is on the rise again.
We have a top young Aussie coach, an assistant who personifies everything that Wigan stands for and a golden generation of young talent coming through. No wonder they are worried!
The tide is turning.
Our scouse friends are already in disarray.
Can't wait for next season!

The gap between your side of this year and ours was already close, as we saw in the semi-final and other games this season.
We will be better next year even if we don't sign any new players, simply because our talented young players will be a year older. You can't say the same.
Added to that of course is the difference MM and SW will make.
No wonder you're scared...

When did Saints last appoint a British coach.
Potter was never a head coach in Australia.

Potter had been a head coach for a couple of years somewhere though hadn't he.
Hanley was the last home grown appointment - but he was quite useful in his one year
As long as the RFL are consistent (ha! two words that do not go together) with all future appointments i don't see any issue with it.
Matt Elliot, Brian Noble, Tony Smith, Shaun McRae, Mick Potter all had no Head Coach experience when they got their first jobs in SL - all didn't exactly make a bad first of it either.

Not forgetting the fact we have already strengthened for next season in the areas we have been hit hardest this year, adding an experienced prop, a Kiwi international centre & have the current England hooker returning and our 4 or 5 very promising youngsters getting more experience.
While Wigan have lost their most destructive and influential forward for 2 years and have a chairman telling the new coach there can be no more signings.
Don't get me wrong i will openly admit I am impressed with the Wigan appointment it is very promising but i'm not sure the tide has turned just yet.

My original statement came directly from the comments on your own board so maybe i was being optimistic to believe some of them.
Nothing in that article suggests any one will be signed though just a few maybe's and what if's he goes as far as to say its odds against anyone coming in for 2010.
2011 i'd expect to see a proper change in the squad - unless MM works miracles with the current bunch
