| Quote ="Dux"I said mid-season that we needed to break up the Percival/Swift partnership for the time being and only play one of them at a time. At that point we were so vulnerable down that flank it was ridiculous. Swift clearly has considerably greater talent than Dawson, and I've no doubt he will become an excellent player, but since Dawson has been getting picked we've been much more solid on that edge defensively, so it makes sense to continue that way for now. Long term, however, I don't think Swift has anything to worry about at all.'"
Exactly, but he should not just expect to be picked as he is the home boy.
Dawson is exactly what we need in the backs, not a super star, but average enough to step into the gap in any of the centres, wingers, fullbacks if they are not up to it or slack off.
If you had a class winger, they would not be content with chopping and changing each week to cover injuries or defensive frailties. IMHO Dawson is best for him at centre, but will not get a spot there as our other centres are better. Although maybe if we did not have Percival injured earlier in the year, Turner maybe should have been dropped for a few games too until he got his act in gear.
As it is, Percival was injured and so Dawson stepped in there and got a decent run. Covering until Swift ups his game is probably the plan, but if Swift can't up his game, then I'd expect us to go shopping rather than have Dawson long term. He's a squad player not a starting 17

I suspect Brown would disagree, hence the young player of the year accolade.

| Wouldn't surprise me if Swift decides to move on, can't be good being left out time and time again.

| Jesus.
A 21 year old isn't an undropable first team regular yet and we all think he should just up sticks? We've made far better youngsters than Swift wait in the stands for their chance, and they were better as a result for it. Patience is a virtue

| I suspect this is just a rumour and nothing else, as he's not exactly an 'established' member of the team, even though he was given the 5 shirt this season. He should be looking at the positives and the potential he has, not just expect a place in the side, it should be a long term view if he's committed to Saints. Just look at the other youngsters who are waiting their turn in our squad!!

Oh, here we go again. More comment on a player's 'attitude'. Last time fans started commenting on a player's 'attitude' the player's Mum felt she had to make sure those fans were corrected (see the article by said Mum in this month's Forty 20 magazine).
I am always surprised that the Mods allow comment on the attitude of players, based upon rumour and speculation.

| Looks like he wants to leave to me.
Like I said at the start, disruptive but not looking like he wants to leave.
Also a much better defensive effort. Held his line until the man with the ball was wrapped up.

Percival looked the best we've had since Gidley tonight. I was very impressed, he can kick a goal too.

| I doubt it. You earn the shirt. I thought Dawson had done enough when he came in for swift to hold him out based on defense. But with Swift tonight he was as good as Dawson in defense, ergo he earns the shirt until he loses it.

| He gets an awful lot of stick does Dawson on here. I like the lad, he's a safe, steady player and he works his backside off every game. He wouldn't be my 1st choice winger/centre but he's decent backup for injuries & poor form. He probably doesn't earn much on the cap either. Instead of slating him, saying he shouldn't even be in squad, never mind the team, let's be grateful for the way he's stepped in and done a job for us this season. No player should be undroppable. It's good that we've got lads like Dawson who are ready to step in, and that's part of the reason we finished top of the pile.

Don't disagree. The big flaw to Dawsons game is he doesn't jump for the ball. There's a classic example of Wakefield at LP - kick comes over he gets out jumped and the opposition score, turner just turned to him arms out like wtf? It almost happened again in huddersifeld had cudjoe not knocked on. BUT he's a solid player who works hard, and I've overall been impressed with him throughout the season (possibly because I had low expectation!)
That said Swift was like fresh air tonight, and whilst he looked a little unsure at first, he had a game which means he must play in the semi ...

The breakaway try from Swift, if that was Dawson I think he would have been caught in the last couple of metres.

I totally agree with this. I don't believe there's a question on who's the bigger threat. Swift is a talent I'm excited about. I just get bugged when supporters like Saddened (whom I do like) say that Dawson isn't worthy of being in the squad. With the salary cap & the fact that there's not as much money in rugby league, you need hard working squad players who are ready to step in.
Let's stop slagging our lads off cos they're not an Anthony Sullivan or a Darren Albert. Players who don't put 100% in a fair game for a forum lynching mind. You can't put Dawson in the less than 100% effort group any week. I'm glad we've got him in the squad.

| Dawson is a bit like Meli, can,t jump and doesn't have great acceleration he should be developed into a back up centre. Swifty is more agile and dynamic his footwork is good when half a gap appears, the problem is creating an understanding with a regular centre at the moment it could be Wheeler, Percival or Jones, we need regular pairings for our outside backs.

| Swifts stats certainly put him top of the pile last night, running 172metres in 14 carries, blasting Carneys stats, with no errors.
If it's good performances that keep you in the team Swift shouldn't have any concerns...

Quite right good partnerships are a rare commodity these days especially through injury, communication and confidence in your inside man is essential if your not to come flying out of position all the time.
