The NRL has appointed former Federal Court judge Tony Whitlam to head an integrity unit set up in the wake of Australian Crime Commission findings about the involvement of organised crime in the supply of performance enhancing drugs and match fixing.
New NRL chief executive Dave Smith joined the leaders of all major Australian sports, Federal Sport Minister Kate Lundy and representatives of the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority and the ACC in Canberra to announce the findings of an investigation.

Both the NRL and AFL have been quick to offer any support they can to the doping commission.
The ARU however, has been conspicuous by its silence.

Not true - the ARU was also represented at the Press Conference, as was cricket and soccer. The heads of all the sports basically gave the same undertakings to support investigations etc.
Having said that, the suggestion is that AFL and NRL have most to fear from the drug side of things, possibly soccer and cricket on the match-fixing angle (which may have been missed by some) due to the international nature of the games involved (apparently $40M was bet on a single soccer match in Melbourne).

ASADA (the Australian anti-doping agency) has said that if players come forward now and provide evidence they will be given "lenient" (i.e. 6 month) bans as opposed to the potential 4 years they could be looking at if they are found guilty without having fessed up. I'd reckon most players will hang fire for a while on that, as they'd probably have to implicate their mates. Having said that, if it really is rife and the ACC have genuine evidence against individuals, we may see a rush to give evidence at some stage.

My dad is on warfarin after a heart op, and he's had several trips to A&E for regular cuts that won't stop bleeding. I can't think of anything worse for an RL player. They'd be swimming by the end of a game
