Just spotted this over on the Bulls site, www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/s ... 6696385.jp
McD is obviously remembering his days in the marines, and has decided to spread the joy of damp clothes and yomping amongst the squad. Now, with the best will in the world, anybody who thinks that observing a teammate who is tired and cold and miserable, is somehow going to strengthen Team Spirit is missing the rather obvious point, that the rest of the squad will be equally as tired, cold and and miserable FFS! Anyone who has ever humped a heavy bergen, will admit that getting to the end and dumping that weight, far outweighed any feelings of appreciation of either team members or the passing scenery.
You can build a feeling of togetherness, just as easily wth your feet dangling in a pool and the sun on your back! As was the original idea. And with much less risk of pulled muscles, twisted ankles etc.
I got the impression from the article that the change of venue was simply down to McD not being part of the original decision. I hope that all the previous good work, methods and experience that our two previous coaches invested in the squad, is not going to be binned simply because the new coach can.

| Good idea. I would have thought that they might have done this before under another coach. I'd not fancy doing it.

| The key phrase out of that article to me is "investing in each other".
You don't build the sort of relationships that mean you're going to work that little bit harder to have your team-mate's back by sitting around a swimming pool in Cyprus. You do it by putting the team in positions of adversity and making them work together to get each other through it.
Like McDermott says, it won't be anything military or too strenuous this close to the season starting, but it will be about getting the squad in a position where they trust that the person next to them has their back and is willing to put in that little bit extra to cover anyone who might be struggling.

| I will buck the trend and say I think it is a really bad decision. We will just have to see how it ends up.
I am totally for McDermot and will back him all the way, but I am getting increasingly frustrated about him continually complaining each week about how little training they have got done due to the weather. Then with an opportunity to get working in a warm quality environment, he then cancels it. I find that strange and inconsistent.

I think whatever gets said in the press, is completely different to what gets done in training on a day to day basis. The only comfort I get out of Brian McDermott been the Rhinos coach is Gary Hetherington’s choice to opt for him and some of Brian’s earlier stuff in coaching before it went t*ts up somewhere and sometime in London.
However I’m pleased with what’s been done in pre-season so far and we can’t really fault him yet. I think this is just a case of a newspaper trying to get rugby league column inches in.
If you want my full opinion on Pre-season though here it is - leeds.rlfans.com/readarticle.php?article_id=1515

| Won't do them any harm and it's not gonna be hot over here for months so there's no need for a trip abroad imo.

| no matter how committed a team is if you take them away to the sun some will see it as a break and do just enough not to be yelled at
on this type of exercise any slackers will stand out and will be letting down team mates so they might be less tempted to not give their all

| No doubt there would have been another thread if they had gone to Cyprus slagging that decision off as just a 'jolly up in the sun' and 'pointless excercise given the current weather conditions' blah,blah,blah...etc

| There seem's to be a few "between the lines"comments about Bluey coming out ,like the one in the sun concerning Senior .
I wonder if Bluey was asked to leave, pushed even.his resignation did come all of a sudden

well i cant dowload news articles, but it was posted on totalrl.com,but that is down now for maintainance, but basically Senior said "this pre season has been refreshing and its gee'd us all up ,the training under Bluey got a bit run of the mill ,we had TS then bluey came in and just tweeked it up, MAYBE THAT WAS HIS DOWNFALL".We were all dissapointed how it went last year ,but under brian we all feel great"It was an article from the Sun.
I just thought the word "downfall"was interesting

I always felt coaches had a finite lifespan with any set of players, typically 3-5 years. Perhaps McLennan's time was up. Then again, a healthy Mcguire and Peacock at the end of the season may well have seen another GF win - being able to beat the eventual champs, away, in a playoff game suggests the potential was there.
